Waimea Bay in Oahu is one of Hawaii’s best beaches. But really, it seems like two totally different beaches, depending on what time of year you visit.

In winter months, it draws big wave surfers who aim to ride its 30+ foot tall waves. In the summer, it’s a tranquil swimming spot that’s perfect for families.

No matter which time of year you visit Oahu, Waimea Bay should be a must-visit beach for you. Want to learn more about this spot? Check out all our best info below!

Driving to the North Shore

Waimea Bay is located on Oahu’s North Shore. Vacationers staying in Honolulu or Waikiki, the North Shore might sound like an out-of-the-way place. And in truth, it is. I mean, it is on the opposite side of the island.

Although Waimea Bay on the North Shore is only 40 miles away from Waikiki Beach, it takes an hour to get there since the average speed limit is 35 mph. This trip is even more time-consuming if you’re taking TheBus.

But a day at Waimea Bay (and nearby attractions) makes the trip to the North Shore completely worth it.

What to do at Waimea Bay

In the winter, Waimea Bay has some of the most famous waves in the world. It’s home to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational and is often considered the birthplace of big wave surfing.

You likely won’t paddle into a monstrous wave, but you can enjoy watching them from shore. Come by on a winter evening to watch the sunset and get dinner at a North Shore Food Truck

In the summer, families flock to Waimea Bay to enjoy the calm waters and pristine snorkeling conditions. There is also a rock formation where adventurers of all ages jump into the waters below.

The sand is clean and spacious, so this is a great place to sunbathe, picnic, read a book, or watch for wildlife (some people have spotted dolphins from shore).

Amenities at Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay has lifeguard stands, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, barbeques, and a dedicated parking lot.

Like most of Hawaii’s popular beaches, we recommend you get here early for the best weather and parking.

What to do Nearby

While visiting the North Shore, you’ve got to check out more of Waimea’s many nearby attractions. One of our favorite things to do in the area is the Waimea Falls hike. You should also mosey around Haleiwa Town and see other nearby beaches, like Shark’s Cove and Sunset Beach.

But be sure to plan plenty of time at Waimea Bay. This is one of Oahu’s best beaches and a great place to spend a shining Hawaii day.
