It’s true. Some people just aren’t built to withstand the twisty, barf-inducing road to Hana town on Maui. With 620 curves and 59 bridges (most are one-way), the road is bound to make you feel a little motion sick; not only is the road winding, but it’s also quite bumpy.
Fly the skies to Hana instead of enduring the curvy road by car.
That’s why travelers might want to check out the new twice-daily flight service from Maui’s Kahului Airport to Hana Airport. It begins Oct. 1, 2012, but passengers may book today. The 20-minute flight takes passengers along the rugged coastline for $59 each way. This does sound a bit expensive to me, since Hawaiian Airline offers one-way tickets to neighbor islands for about $60. But for some, it’s worth bypassing the barf. And if you book three-nights at Travaasa Hana, Maui – a resort and spa at the end of the road – your flight is on the house! The partnership between the resort and airline makes this sweet deal possible.
The plane is a fairly small plane; a nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravan, which makes me wonder how bumpy the flight might be on windier days. It’d be ironic if airplane passengers got motion sickness from flying when that’s the one thing they wanted to avoid.
The morning flight will depart Kahului Airport at 11:19 a.m. and departs Hana at noon. The afternoon flight departs Kahului at 4:14 p.m. and leaves Hana at 4:55 p.m.
