The Laylow Hotel in Waikiki is one of the newer boutique hotels to debut recently. The 251-room property was recently renovated by Marriot to the tune of $60 million and opened in early 2017. Particular attention to details in the hotel’s new design was paramount, and a Portland-based creative design firm was brought in to remake the brand in a modern image of the Golden Age of Waikiki and Art Deco themes.
The point of a boutique hotel is to be unique, and the Laylow Hotel Waikiki is certainly that. The renovations focused on integrating spaces and flow throughout the old hotel, and the results are charming. The lobby and reception area were moved to the second floor to maximize the efficient use of space while featuring tropic themes and motifs.
And the innovative new design of the Laylow Hotel has garnered international attention in the hospitality, design, and architecture industries. The hotel has been featured in multiple, international print and online publications for its casual elegance and sense of being hidden away, even in the heart of Waikiki.
Hotel management seeks to appeal to millennials, so along with the understated “mid-century” design theme, rooms and suites are equipped with high tech amenities like smart televisions and Wi-Fi. The designers of the Laylow Hotel weren’t specifically targeting millennials, although hotel’s soulfulness appeals to them. There are perfect “selfie” locations throughout the hotel, something that was incorporated into the design.
The Laylow Hotel is home to Hideout, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Executive Chef Bryan Byard has been featured in Modern Luxury and is acclaimed for his Pacific Rim cuisine that incorporates locally-sourced ingredients with premium meats and seafood. The nearby pool is surrounded by large chaise lounge chairs and looks down onto Kuhio Avenue below. Live entertainment is offered throughout the week
The Laylow Hotel offers a variety of rooms and suites to choose from, each with their own charms. It is also pet-friendly, a policy many new boutique hotels in Hawaii and around the world have adopted. The hotel also offers ukulele lessons and a 24-hour fitness room.
Amid the constant hustle and bustle of Waikiki, the Laylow Hotel is an oasis of style and substance. It’s a shining example of what the new direction in boutique hotels is meant to look and feel like.
This is one of my favorite new Hotels to recommend in Waikiki . The rooms are comfortable, large and stylishly decorated. The food at the Hideaway is excellent (the Poke Wonton Tacos are perfection) and the drinks are well poured and the bar staff were all great to talk to. The pool area is small but perfectly formed and the location is excellent.
