Hawaii is expensive. We can’t deny that, and we’re not going to pretend coming here is going to be cheap. But it just might be the trip of a lifetime. Many of my friends and family who have come to visit me have told me it was the best trip of their entire lives – and that it was worth every penny.
We want to make the dream of a Hawaii vacation accessible to you here at Hawaii Aloha Travel. While we simply cannot get around some costs, we can help you spread your dollar.
And since we all live here, we can help you find the best deals and the best things to do here. We can help you find the best deals. And we know the best things to do that are free or don’t cost much because those are the things that we tend to do ourselves. You don’t need to spend a ton of money eating out every night. We know where to go to eat on the cheap because we surely aren’t eating out expensive dinners every weekend ourselves.

Save money on your room
Do you need an ocean view room? Or can you stay in a room without a view? If you are planning to spend all day out at the beach, you can save money by skipping the ocean-view rooms. You will have plenty of time to look at the ocean when you are at the beach! You would be amazed at the price difference among rooms with a view and regular rooms. Listen to our podcast titled, Hotel Room Types, to find out what kind of room is right for you.
Another way to save money on lodging is to book a condo. Not only will you have more space, but you will also have a kitchen and a refrigerator.
Look for specials. Sometimes, hotels will run offers that include breakfast or one night free after a certain amount of nights. Since Hawaii Aloha Travel has relationships with hotels throughout the islands, we often can help you get the best rates, too.
Save money on Food
Yes, food in Hawaii is expensive – especially if you decided to eat all of your meals at your resort.
But there are a lot of ways to save money. Check out our podcast titled, “How to Budget for Meals on your Hawaii Vacation” to get a better idea of the prices and how to save money.
The most obvious choice is to get a condo so that you can cook at home. And I know what you are going to say: the last thing that you want to do on vacation is cook. But hear me out.
You can save a ton of money by eating just one meal in your condo each day. If you have a fridge, get some yogurt, cereal, toast – whatever it is that you usually eat at home – and eat that for breakfast. Simply by skipping eating breakfast out can save you hundreds of dollars over a week if you are with your family.
That way, you aren’t spending a lot of time cooking, but you are saving a lot of money.
If you are really looking to save money, you could also pack up some sandwiches to eat for lunch. My husband and I usually do this if we know that we are going to be hiking or at the beach all day. This saves you time because you don’t have to stop what you are doing and find a place to eat. It also will save you money. Buy snacks to eat in between meals while you are hiking or exploring, too.
Then you can go out for nicer dinners. Pair your dinner with an experience, like a luau or a dinner cruise. That way, you are getting both a good meal and an experience in Hawaii. Luaus usually come with entertainment, and I love dinner cruises where you can see the sunset over the water.
Check out some of my favorite restaurants with a view and Oahu’s most romantic restaurants. As much as I love to save money, these places are worth the splurge. Visiting farmers markets and Eat the Street are other ways to save money and to eat some authentic meals.
Save money by planning ahead
By planning ahead, you can have more flexibility in your traveling. The farther ahead you book your airfare, the cheaper it will be. It’s also easier to save up if you start planning now.
By planning ahead, you can also avoid the most expensive times of year. Instead of coming to Hawaii for Christmas and New Year’s, consider coming the week after the holidays are over. Not only will accommodations and flights be way cheaper, but they will be less crowded as well.
The best things in life (and Hawaii) are free!
I always say that my favorite things to do in Hawaii are free. This is great for me because I don’t have to spend a lot of money on the weekends, but it’s also great for you because you don’t need to spend a lot of money on attractions and entertainment.
Things like watching the sunset, relaxing at the pool, swimming in the ocean, and hiking my favorite trails, are all free. Oahu’s most popular attractions, such as Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Punchbowl, the Honolulu Zoo, the Honolulu Aquarium, botanical gardens, museums, visiting coffee farms, and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay or Shark’s Cove, are all either free or not too expensive.
Try choosing a few must-do splurges, like a luau, dinner cruise, or another excursion, like a Secret Hawaii Tours. Save money by mixing in free or cheaper activities, like hikes or going to the beach. Drive out to the best lookout points on the island.
