Located just five minutes from the airport, Mark’s Place is THE place to instantly immerse yourself into the local flavors of Kauai. The plate-lunch eatery attracts all kinds of people – from the locals working nearby to the tourists looking for some grub.

Finding Mark’s Place may be somewhat of a challenge if you don’t have a GPS system. That’s because it sits in the least-likely of places, smack-dab in the middle of an industrial area. The umbrella picnic tables outside, however, stick out like a sore thumb, so you know you’re in the right place once you spot them. Mark’s Place isn’t at all fancy nor does it have much of a restaurant ambiance since it’s more of a to-go kind of eatery; however, it makes up for that in the food department. Hands down, the best local foods on Kauai – from barbecue chicken to loco mocos. Mark’s dishes out generous portions that are affordable and most of all, tasty.

Every time we come to Kauai, we try to show up hungry because Mark’s is usually our first stop from the airport. We order the Korean chicken plate with brown rice and a side salad. I like that Mark’s offers healthy alternatives that most plate lunch places lack. They use mostly all local ingredients from island fishermen and farmers; Mark’s even has its own hydroponic gardens set up outside. A major plus for the health-conscious consumers.

Because Mark’s has become so popular, there’s usually quite the wait. My best advice would be to call in your order ahead of time, pick it up and then head to the beach for a picnic!
