Banana Patch Studio goes above and beyond any other art store I’ve been to. As an art gallery, shopping venue and creative working studio, the Hanapēpē shop has managed to paint a whole new experience for Kauai visitors and art lovers alike.

From outside, the shop looks like a cute plantation home – complete with white wooden trimmings and all. Inside is just as quaint. Schar, one of the in-house artists, always welcomes customers with a warm smile and lots of aloha, while a cozy sitting area welcomes those who want to rest their feet. But it’s the back wall of beautiful handmade tiles that will really catch your eye.

In fact, those painted tiles are among the most popular items for visitors to take back with them. They’re not only gorgeous wall adornments for any room in the house but also small and easy to pack. Not to mention, the perfect reminders of Hawaii. Each ceramic piece is custom painted with a special island design and/or saying.

Lovely local art pieces – ranging from ceramic sculptures to water color paintings – cover almost every square inch of Banana Patch. Cruise toward the back and find another room of works. The shop has definitely got that museum-like feel to it, as the walls are strategically arranged with different paintings and illuminated by a warm glowing light.

Unlike most museums/galleries, however, there’s a chance for visitors to meet a few of the local artists while perusing through the store. The artists are usually working hard in the studio next door or firing up ceramic pieces in the kiln out back. This not only adds to the shop’s already homey vibe but also gives each and every art piece a humanistic element, so to speak. Talking story with the artists allows customers to discover the heart and soul of the artist’s work, making it an even more special way to remember the islands.

  1. Mahalo for this interesting article and focus on Banana Patch Studio.  There is a slight correction for the address .  We are located in Hanapepe  at this location.  There is another satelite Banana Patch Gallery in Kilauea.

  2. Mahalo, Schar for catching that. I just corrected the address. Nice seeing you! If you have a website of your art work, please feel free to leave that address here.Aloha, Alyssa, Editor of Hawaii Vacation Blog
