How to Plan a Maui Couples Vacation
For most visitors, a vacation to Maui is a rare indulgence — a special trip they save up for and look forward to. So you want to make sure it’s worth the investment and effort.
The best way to make sure your Maui couple’s vacation is expertly planned and full of the best things to do? Work with a true expert. At Hawaii Aloha Travel, we offer local expertise and years of experience, and we bring that all to your vacation plans.
Here are important things to consider as you book your trip:
- Your budget: a luxe vacation is the ultimate experience, but there are definitely ways to plan a budget trip to Hawaii.
- Where to stay: Maui has great options for hotels and condos. Most visitors stay in South Maui (Wailea and Kihei) or West Maui (Kaanapali or Kapalua). A condo will feature a kitchen and a separate living space. Hotels offer a classic resort experience.
- How long to stay: If you’re island hopping, you may want to spend 3-4 days on Maui and a few days on another island. If your entire vacation is on Maui, 6-8 days is the typical length of a couple’s trip here.
- What to do: Will you be spending most of your time at the beach and hotel pool? Or will you be out on adventures during your stay? Planning on a little bit of both is ideal: there’s lots to see and do on Maui, but you want plenty of relaxation during your romantic getaway.

Things to do in Maui, Hawaii, for Couples
You’re looking forward to a romantic, relaxing trip to Maui, but the right activities can elevate your entire getaway. Let’s take a look at the top things for couples to do here and include them in your itinerary.
Watch the sunrise at Haleakala
If you don’t mind an early start, this will be one of the most memorable experiences of your Maui vacation. The sunrise at Haleakala is stunning. And lots of people think so — there’s a reason whythe National Park requires reservations for sunrise viewing hours.
If you aren’t much for an early-morning adventure, you can drive up to the summit of Haleakala at sunset instead. The views are still beautiful, and you won’t need a reservation. Stick around after dark to admire the stars from the high elevation.

Walk through Iao Valley
Iao Valley is just down the road from central Wailuku, a small town on Maui. But it feels like it’s a whole different world. Here, towering green cliffs surround you as you meander through a path. See kalo (taro) grow alongside tropical flowers. You could call this adventure a hike. If so, it would be a short, relatively easy hike with some elevation change.
Explore Honolua Jungle
If you’re staying in West Maui, you’ll be a short drive away from Honolua Jungle, which is one of my favorite places in all of Maui. This hidden trail takes you through thick vegetation and trickling streams and ends at a bay. Bring along your snorkeling gear, because when conditions are right, the rocky bay is teeming with fish.
Or, bring along your camera. The jungle makes for amazing romantic photos.
Get a couple’s massage
A massage is always a great way to relax, and Maui has so many spas to choose from. Most couples enjoy spa days at upscale resorts. It’s also a good chance to enjoy the hotel grounds and possibly a relaxing meal at an onsite restaurant.
Reserve a poolside cabana
One of the best things about Maui hotels: the pools. Many 5-star resorts on the island have large pool complexes with bars, adult-only areas, and amazing views. Want 5-star service during your pool day? A cabana typically offers more space and shade, a dedicated server, and on-hand food and drink.
If you’re not staying at a resort, consider booking through Resort Pass for access to a hotel pool. This is a great thing to do for couples who want to do an upscale pool day in Maui, Hawaii, but don’t want to book a hotel for their full vacation.

Attend a luau
A luau is a quintessential Hawaii experience, and it’s a great thing for couples to do. The Old Lahaina Luau is the go-to choice for vacationers, and The Feast at Mōkapu (at the Andaz resort) has an especially romantic setting.
Snorkel at Molokini Crater
Have you heard of Molokini Crater? This is the ultimate snorkeling spot, but you’ll need to take a boat there. Join a snorkel excursion to access this protected area off the coast of Maui. You’ll see lots of different fish and experience the thrill of swimming in such a clear, calm setting.
This Molokini tour for couples lasts 4 hours, which keeps it from taking a full day in your vacation. It also includes a stop at an off-shore snorkel spot that’s popular among sea turtles.
Let your love blossom at Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm
A driving tour of upcountry Maui is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon in Maui. It’s also enroute to Haleakala National Park, so it’s easy to combine with a trip to the summit.
If you visit the upcountry area, be sure to stop by this Lavender farm in Maui, which is a gorgeous garden with sweeping views of Maui’s central valley and southern coast. This costs $5 to get in, which makes this a great budget-friendly activity for couples.

Shop your way through Paia town
Paia is a funky fun town on Maui’s North Shore. It’s home to unique restaurants (including the popular Paia Fish Market), cute boutiques, a hippy-esque atmosphere, and lots of people watching. You can get unique souvenirs and a tasty snack while enjoying the fun vibes of Paia.
Drive the Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is one of the most talked-about things to do in Maui. But if you’re short on time, it can easily drain away a full day. So we recommend a Road to Hana adventure only to couples who are spending more than 4 or 5 days in Maui (unless it tops your bucket list, of course!).
Make your way along the winding road and stop at a range of hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks along the way.
Dine at Mama’s Fish House
When you start talking about your upcoming trip to Maui, people will likely ask you if you’ve made reservations at Mama’s Fish House yet. This popular restaurant is in a quiet area in North Shore Maui, right next to a secluded beach. The sea food is incredibly fresh, and the setting is romantic but not stiff.
Zipline above the trees
Experience a thrill as a couple and catch amazing views as you do. Ziplining is surprisingly romantic, especially if you enjoy high-octane activities. Kapalua Ziplines is an exciting adventure that overlooks the ocean. And it’s a great thing for couples to do in Maui Hawaii: all lines on the tour are side-by-side, so you and your sweetie can zip together.
Take a helicopter tour
If a zipline isn’t high enough for you, consider a helicopter tour of Maui. Some tours will take you over waterfalls that are only accessible via helicopter, and you can also choose tours that will take you over Molokai as well.
Cruise in a classic car
Here’s something unique to do in Maui: cruise alongside the ocean in a classic car. Maui Roadsters offers half and full day rentals of adorable vintage convertibles. It makes for Instagram-worthy photos and a fun adventure.
Couples who are mostly staying in their resort bubble may enjoy renting a roadster for the day and getting out and about for a bit.

Enjoy an oceanside picnic
There are so many restaurants to try in Maui, from Mama’s Fish House (mentioned above) to the casual Aloha Mixed Plate. But you really can’t beat an oceanside picnic. No battles for the best view, no long waits, and no worries at all.
There are picnic tables at most Maui beaches, and some have BBQ grills next to them in case you want to chef up your own picnic.
Join pau hana happy hour
A picnic is great, but if you want to rub elbows with other vacationers (and some locals!), happy hour is the place to be. Many restaurants and hotel lobbies feature live Hawaiian music at happy hour (typically between 4-6 pm, but it varies), and you may be able to get deals on food too.
Watch a Maui sunset: The best thing to in Maui Hawaii for couples
Here’s a top thing to do for couples that you can repeat every day of your vacation. Watching the sunset in Maui is an unbeatable experience, and we encourage everyone to slow down and take in this breathtaking sight.
Here are a few of our favorite places to watch the sunset in Maui:
- Makena Cove in South Maui.
- Kaanapali Beach – especially near Black Rock.
- Haleakala summit
- Keawakapu Beach in Wailea
- Kapalua Bay or Kapalua Coastal Trail
- Onboard a sunset catamaran cruise

Top Questions About a Maui Couples Vacation
Still wondering on things? Here are a few questions we often get about what to do during a romantic couple’s vacation in Maui, Hawaii:
Q: Where is the best place for couples to stay on Maui?
- Any of the 5-star resorts make for an exceptional vacation. Hotel Wailea is an adults-only hotel, and the Andaz is known for its modern and upscale atmosphere. But many couples have a great vacation at a lower-end hotel or condo, depending on what they prioritize for their getaway.
Q: Should we island hop during our couple’s trip to Maui?
- You can have a great vacation on Maui, without visiting any other islands. Island hopping could be a fun thing to do if you’ve visited Maui before, or if you want to see as much as possible during your time in Hawaii.
Q: What should we budget for our romantic Hawaii vacation?
- Maui is generally regarded as the most expensive island to vacation on, mostly because of its many luxe resorts. However, if you plan well and sacrifice some big-ticket experiences, you can likely plan a 7-day Maui vacation for 2 for around $8,000. Less is certainly possible if you’re thrifty, and you can easily spend more.
