If you don’t mind an early start, this will be one of the most memorable experiences of your Maui vacation. The sunrise at Haleakala is stunning. And lots of people think so — there’s a reason whythe National Park requires reservations for sunrise viewing hours. 

If you aren’t much for an early-morning adventure, you can drive up to the summit of Haleakala at sunset instead. The views are still beautiful, and you won’t need a reservation. Stick around after dark to admire the stars from the high elevation. 

Walk through Iao Valley

Iao Valley is just down the road from central Wailuku, a small town on Maui. But it feels like it’s a whole different world. Here, towering green cliffs surround you as you meander through a path. See kalo (taro) grow alongside tropical flowers. You could call this adventure a hike. If so, it would be a short, relatively easy hike with some elevation change. 

Explore Honolua Jungle

If you’re staying in West Maui, you’ll be a short drive away from Honolua Jungle, which is one of my favorite places in all of Maui. This hidden trail takes you through thick vegetation and trickling streams and ends at a bay. Bring along your snorkeling gear, because when conditions are right, the rocky bay is teeming with fish. 

Or, bring along your camera. The jungle makes for amazing romantic photos. 

Get a couple’s massage

A massage is always a great way to relax, and Maui has so many spas to choose from. Most couples enjoy spa days at upscale resorts. It’s also a good chance to enjoy the hotel grounds and possibly a relaxing meal at an onsite restaurant. 

Reserve a poolside cabana 

One of the best things about Maui hotels: the pools. Many 5-star resorts on the island have large pool complexes with bars, adult-only areas, and amazing views. Want 5-star service during your pool day? A cabana typically offers more space and shade, a dedicated server, and on-hand food and drink.

Paia is a funky fun town on Maui’s North Shore. It’s home to unique restaurants (including the popular Paia Fish Market), cute boutiques, a hippy-esque atmosphere, and lots of people watching. You can get unique souvenirs and a tasty snack while enjoying the fun vibes of Paia. 

Drive the Road to Hana
