Which Island Is Best For Your Vacation?

Most people who vacation in Hawaii choose Oahu, Maui, Kauai, or Hawaii Island. These islands all have a variety of hotels and condos, beautiful beaches, and many activities for all ages.

Below, we’ve organized the best places to visit in Hawaii based on island, so you can get an idea of what island you’ll like best.

The other two main islands in Hawaii are Lanai and Molokai. These islands are far quieter, with fewer accommodations and activities. If you think you might want to visit one of these two islands, work with a locally-based Hawaii travel agent to help ensure they are the best places for your Hawaii vacation and that you’ve planned it out properly.

Oahu

Oahu is home to Honolulu, the state’s capital. It’s also where you’ll find bustling Waikiki, the famous Aulani Disney Resort, and North Shore big wave surfing. Here are some of the best places to visit on Oahu, Hawaii:

Pearl Harbor

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii

Many people come to Hawaii just to visit Pearl Harbor and The USS Arizona Memorial. The memorial honors the heroes and lives lost during the Dec. 7th, 1941, attack at Pearl Harbor. The area also includes a battleship tour and an aviation museum.

Waikiki

It’s the classic tourist destination in Hawaii: Waikiki. This busy, tropical neighborhood has beautiful beaches, fun shopping, and lots of restaurants. It’s also a central spot for hotels, but even if you don’t stay in Waikiki, you’ll want to come by and visit for at least a few hours. It’s one of Hawaii’s must-visit places.

Hanauma Bay

Looking for some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii? Hanauma Bay is one of the top places to see tropical fish during your vacation. You’ll need to reserve your spot and pay admission – it’s all part of an effort to control crowds and preserve the natural beauty of Hanauma Bay. Most visitors think it’s worth the price and planning for a better experience.

Diamond Head

When you visit Waikiki, you’ll see Diamond Head in the distance, looming over the blue Pacific Ocean and the city below. But did you know you can hike to the peak of Diamond Head? If you’re up for the trek, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Oahu’s coastline and some neat military and geological history.

Kailua Beach

Families Enjoying Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach often ranks among the best beaches in the world. This is an ideal spot for a range of water activities, like kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, and swimming. Plus there’s soft sand and gorgeous scenery. A perfect way to spend a Hawaii Beach day.

Iolani Palace & Bishop Museum

While in Hawaii, don’t skip out on learning about Hawaiian culture and history. One of the best places to do this is at Iolani Palace, which is the only official royal residence in the United States, and Bishop Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of Polynesian artifacts. Both of these valuable museums are in Honolulu.

Waimea Valley

You have to pay to access the hike and waterfall swim in Waimea Valley, but it’s still one of our favorite places to visit in Hawaii. The hike is accessible and informative, and lifeguards watch over waterfall swimmers. This is a fantastic North Shore area that you have to check out.

Dole Plantation

The entrance to the Dole Plantation.

Dole plantation is very touristy, but it’s still a lot of fun. You can walk through a maze, take a train tour, and walk through gardens. Learn about how pineapple was once a money-maker for Hawaii farmers and how it’s still valued and grown in the state today.

Maui

Many people think that Maui is the best place to visit in Hawaii. It’s got a lot of things to do without the big-city hustle of Oahu. Stay in the sunny south shore (Wailea or Kihei), or opt for scenic West Maui (Kaanapali and Kapalua). Either way, be sure to travel around the island to discover some amazing sights.

Road to Hana

The road to Hana is such a unique experience. Travel 52 miles along a winding coastal road. Along the way, you’ll cross dozens of single-lane bridges, step in glistening streams, look out over scenic vistas, and hike along lush trails.

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park includes the summit of Maui’s dormant volcano and the coastline below it near Hana. One of the most popular experiences on Maui is watching the sunrise from atop Haleakala, but you can also catch fantastic views at sunset.

Iao Valley State Park

Iao Needle and the Wailuku River

For an easy hike with a fascinating history, check out Iao Valley State Park in Wailuku. You’ll be deep within the valleys of the emerald West Maui Mountains, by streams that trickle with icy clear water. See tropical plants, canoe crops, and trees as you walk along the paved pathways.

Makawao

First-time visitors to Hawaii may be unfamiliar with the islands’ cowboy communities, but it’s such a fun thing to learn about while visiting. And a great place to discover this is Makawao town, a hub for paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) who live or ranch along the slopes of Haleakala. This is part of Upcountry Maui, one of the best places to visit if you love scenic drives and interesting roadside stops.

Kaanapali Beach & Black Rock

It’s nearly impossible to choose the best beach in Maui, but Kaanapali is definitely a must-visit! It is a broad, beautiful beach that often has nice swimming conditions. Come at sunset to see the nightly cliffdiving ceremony.

Molokini Crater

Want to discover one of the best snorkeling spots in Hawaii? Take a boat trip out to Molokini Crater, an islet just off Maui’s southern coast that is home to colorful fish and calm conditions.

Maui Tropical Plantation

Maui Tropical Plantation is Maui’s answer to Oahu’s Dole Plantation. Here, you can see beautiful tropical flowers or shop at the onsite gift shop. Take a train ride to see even more of the grounds and local plants. There is also a restaurant here along with ziplining.

Nakalele Blowhole

Nakalele Blowhole is a sight to behold, especially if you’ve never seen a blowhole in action. But, half the fun of Nakalele is in the journey here. Travel along the winding roads of West Maui to access this scenic spot overlooking the Pacific Ocean. If you travel from Kaanapali, this will be your turnaround spot before you end up on tricky, one-lane roads.

Kauai

Many visitors are drawn to Kauai because of its quiet atmosphere and verdant scenery. However, there are still fantastic resorts to stay at and plenty of activities for any type of traveler.

Waimea Canyon

Did you know that Hawaii has a canyon so large that it’s been nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific?” This is Waimea Canyon, a 10-mile-long spectacle that is 3,500 feet deep and a mile wide. This state park site is home to many hiking trails and is one of Hawaii’s best places to visit.

Na Pali Coast

Kauai’s Na Pali coastline is a must-see, whether you hike through some of its coastline or marvel at it from the water. This area along the island’s northern coast is uninhabited and largely inaccessible. We recommend a boat trip to see this area for its beauty.

Poipu Beach

Poipu beach

If you want a classic beach day on Kauai, head to Poipu Beach. This fun spot is in a dry, sunny area of the island. It’s a great place to swim, surf, boogie board, snorkel, sunbathe, and people-watch. It’s in a busy part of the island near great hotels and dining.

Spouting Horn

Near Poipu Beach, you’ll find Spouting Horn, a blow hole that sprays water up to 50 feet in the air. You won’t spend much time here, but it’s one of the best places to visit if you want to see something truly unique while you’re in Hawaii.

Wailua River

Fern grotto kauai

Kauai has the only navigable rivers in Hawaii, and the most popular one to visit is the Wailua River. Here, you can kayak through a lush forest, take a boat trip to a fern grotto, or access a remote waterfall. Join guided tours for the best experience along this Kauai treasure.

Hanapepe

The town of Hanapepe is such a charming little place. Nicknamed “Kauai’s Biggest Little Town,” this cute spot is home to local restaurants, art galleries, and shops with a classic Hawaii feel that you might miss in the bigger cities. Come on Friday evenings for “Art Night,” when the streets are even more lively with local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Hawaii Island: Best Places to Visit

If you want to see a volcano in Hawaii, you’ll need to visit Hawaii Island (“The Big Island”). But there is so much more here than the beautiful National Park (though we of course included it in our list of best places to visit here!). Check out these fun spots on Hawaii Island:

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Come see Kilauea, one of Hawaii’s active volcanoes that often erupts at the National Park. Embark on the Crater Rim Drive, which takes you along some of the park’s most unique sights and hikes. And be sure to check out the Visitors Center to learn all about this incredible spot.

Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park

Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park

On the western coast of Hawaii Island (near Kona), you’ll find Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. This is a popular snorkeling spot and fishing area. But you can also discover unique historical sites, take a hike, and possibly see Honu (Green Sea Turtles) resting.

Mauna Kea

The highest point in all of Hawaii is Mauna Kea. And the best time to visit this stunning place is at night, when it becomes the ultimate stargazing destination. The best views of the night sky are from the Visitors Center, a little below the summit. But you can book a guided tour all the way to the top if you want to get as high as possible on your after-hours adventure.

Hilo Town
