How do I get help planning my Hawaii Vacation?

How Do I seek help in planning my Hawaii Vacation?

Planning a Hawaii Vacation can be very frustrating for most people.  First off it’s very hard to get pricing online if you want to do a multi-island package.  It’s also a destination a lot of people don’t know about.  Choosing the right island, the right accomodations, time to travel can be difficult for most people.  You are not alone.

First you can contact a travel agency.  How most people find that agency usually entails a google search.  Or if you are reading this you have probably found our agency, Hawaii Aloha Travel.

How do I know if that is a good agency?

There may be some things you would like to look for in that travel agency.  First, are they a legit accredited agency.  You can also read the testimonials from past travelers.  For Hawaii a travel agent with an expertise in hawaii travel is a plus for you.  Because hawaii is a difficult destination to plan for someone who knows nothing of the islands, a specialist in this destination is a real advantage.

With Hawaii Aloha Travel all the agents were either born and raised in the islands or have lived in the islands for a very long time, giving first hand knowledge of your destination of choice.

How do I go about getting a quote from Hawaii Aloha Travel?

Getting a quote from Hawaii Aloha is quick and easy.  For the quickest results you can call in to 1-800-843-8771 and get personal service from one of many agents.  If you want all the agents pictures are up on the website and if for some reason you prefer to work with a certain agent from their blogs, testimonials or for any reason, you can simply click on their picture and get their extension and call them personally.  We specialize in any and all hawaii travel as well as cruises.

You can also submit an email request by filling out the form online and an agent will contact you that same day.

When filling out the form you will be asked for an email address, phone number, travel dates, airport you would be traveling from, how many passengers, what island (s) you would like to visit, type of accomodations you are looking for and if you would like a car or transfers included in the quote.

Why ask for a phone number when all I want is an email quote?

-A phone number is very important for many reasons.  Sometimes while typing in your request you may accidentally type in the wrong email address.  While sometimes we can figure out where the mistake is if say you type in yaho.com instead of yahoo.com , if it is a mistake in your personal area of the email address we will have no other way to contact you in that event.

-Another reason is with email these days sometimes we get sent to the spam folder or even blocked as spam.  There are many times people will just simply delete their entire spam folder and never know we had sent them a quote.

-Also sometimes for us to get a better feel for exactly what you are looking for it’s a lot easier for us to communicate to you via phone so we be sure to give you exactly what you are looking for.  If you can fill out the notes portion of the request form with as much details as you can that does make it a little easier for us to do a quote.  Sometimes the forms are very vague and we are not mind readers unfortunately so more information really helps us to find you the best deal for what you are wanting.

What if I just want a ballpark figure?

If you are just looking for a ball park figure on your trip, the best thing to do is to try calling and have an agent get you a quick ballpark figure for what you are looking for.  Many times our prices can beat online agencies, however they are a good judge of ballpark figures as well.  If you are checking online prices from online booking engines and it looks to be in your price range, try a travel agent.  We can tap into the wholesale prices and may even find you a better deal than what you have found.

We try to get you the most for your money.  If you find something online it helps us if you can tell us exactly what you have found online.  While the prices these online booking engines may be very inexpensive, you are free to choose on your own where to stay without any personal help.  We can also quote you for these properties as well, however we may find a better property for you at the same or around the same price.

Remember, with hawaii aloha you get your own personal travel agent working for you.  When submitting a request online or calling in, this agent is taking their time to help you plan the best hawaii trip.

Why is a Hawaii Vacation the perfect destination?

Choosing the islands of Hawaii has many great points for your next vacation and for many vacations to follow as well.

-Fun for all ages

As a vacation destination Hawaii is great for all ages.  Family vacations are great in hawaii as there is something for everyone.  There are many different islands to choose from and depending on what type of travelers you will have, family , young adults or looking for a romantic trip for a honeymoon or anniversary. There is an island for everyone.

It also is a destination that you can return to for years and it will feel like it is your first time.  You get married and honeymoon in maui, you come back years later with your children and go to oahu and then for your anniversary you return and visit the island of kauai.  Not only is it a destination for all ages, but a good destination to satisify your needs for all stages of your life!

-Great Weather year round

The Weather in Hawaii is generally about the same temperatures year round.  Somewhere in the 80’s generally.  That’s not to say it never rains in hawaii, but the temperatures are generally about the same, so even if the weather is "bad" which is rare for hawaii you can still go to the beach or go swimming, yes even in the winter!  The other great thing is, many times if it rains in hawaii, you can simply drive to another part of the island the sun may be shining nice and bright so you can work on that tan!

-Educational experience

Hawaii is filled with education.  Pearl Harbor is a great US historical site to visit.  There is also historical hawaiian sites to visit and also a great way to learn about the hawaiian culture and it’s people.  What a great way to take a vacation and have your children learn a bit of history while having fun.

-Many choices of how to vacation

There are so many ways to do a trip to hawaii that there certainly is something for everyone.  You can fly to one island and stay your entire trip there.  You can island hop by doing an air/land package or for those who love to cruise you can island hop aboard one of many ships sailing to hawaii.  And for those who don’t like to fly..you are in luck.  You can catch a ship out of the west coast and sail to hawaii as well.

-Food, Food, Food

Okay who doesn’t like good food?  Of course when you visit a new place you like to try the food.  Hawaii has the most delicious food.  It’s unique and probably different than what you are used to, but it is "ono".  The fruits are always great in hawaii as well for you healthy eaters.  Lau Lau, Kalua Pig and Poi, not to mention the mai tai’s and the lava flows to wash it down with.  There are so many cultures in hawaii that you can find just about any type of food you can dream of..japanese, chinese, hawaiian, korean , good old american food and much more.  The only down side to the food is….you will miss it when you go home!

-Last but certainly not least, The People of Hawaii

The people of hawaii will most definately make your Hawaii Vacation a memorable one.  The way of life for people of hawaii is the "Aloha Spirit" .  People who live in hawaii are a warm and friendly people who are very welcoming to all of hawaii visitors.  They love to share the beauty and culture of their island home. Hawaii is very laid back and relaxed and creates for a beautiful environment to be in.  The great thing is that is one free gift you take with you from hawaii.  The gift of the Aloha Spirit will forever be in your heart!

For a family vacation, honeymoon , anniversary, or you just need to get away from the hustle and bustle and relax and have fun in the sun Hawai is the perfect destination for you.

Hawaii Cruise Vocabulary

Often Times when booking a cruise the basic terminology tends to trip people up.  My actual idea for this blog was because while watching a courtroom drama on TV the other day..a travel agent was being sued….and from her testimony I can see why.  So here are some real basic cruise vocabulary to help you better understand your agent when creating your perfect hawaii cruise vacation.

Forward, Aft, Mid section

This is referring to the area on the ship your cabin is.  Forward being in the front of the ship, Aft being in the back end of the ship and mid section or mid ship being cabins located toward the middle of the ship.  What is the difference?  Well many people like to be mid ship as said the boat tends to rock less in this section.  Also sometimes people don’t want to be forward and /or on the bottom levels because when the anchors drop..you know it.  Most often times you can have your cabin pre assigned.  Sometimes it’s not the cheapest way to go , but other times it does not make a difference, depending on the specials.

Cabin Category-inside, oceanview, balcony, suite, etc.

These are the terms referring to the type of cabin you are looking for.

Inside cabins tend to be the smallest with no windows at all.   They are not necessarily always on the bottom decks.  You can get inside cabins as high as deck 10.

Oceanview cabins are slightly bigger with windows.  Now these cabins can sometimes come with either a smaller port hole window or a large picture window.  So if that makes a difference to you be sure to let your agent know.  Also many people assume an oceanview won’t be on a lower deck..which is also not true.

Balcony cabins are slightly larger with a private balcony.  Now somtimes when you see cabin square footage they will tell you the entire square footage including the balcony, so don’t be fooled sometimes thinking you are getting a much much bigger cabin and a balcony, which is not the case.  Sure th balcony does add more room , but I have had some customers that were fooled by looking online into thinking these were bigger cabins, plus the balcony.

Suites and higher.  These are generally bigger cabins.  Not always meaning you can put more people in them but giving you more room and a little more added touches such as butler and conceirge service. There are many different types of suites, penthouses and villas so ask your travel agent for the different types as they may differ from ship to ship, but the inside, oceanview and balcony are pretty basic on all ships.

Guaranty Category

This was the big one that made me realize if a travel agent doesn’t know what this means then why would consumers.

There are times when the cruiselines will offer a guaranty cateogry…usually shown as "GTY" .  What this is, is say you book an inside cabin.  You don’t want anything fancy schmancy, but hey if they upgrade you why not?  If they don’t then not a big deal.  So you book an inside cabin.  They Guarantee that you will get at least the cabin category you booked, however you could possibly be upgraded at a later time when cabins are assigned.  When booking a guaranty you do not get a cabin assigned at the time of booking.

Now this is an important thing to know when booking a guaranty as the agent on TV said she booked these people in an oceanview guaranty, which meant they are guaranteed an upgrade to a balcony…well even the judge knew that was wrong!

An important thing to remember about guarantees.  Generally once the cabin is assigned you may not be able to change the cabin.  So if they assign you a forward section or aft when you wanted mid ship, well that is the chance you take when booking a guaranty.

Also I notice many online sites will price out for more than 2 passengers in a guaranty category.  Note: You can not book more than 2 passengers in a guarantee category.  Not all cabins can accomodate more than 2 passengers, so you do need to get a cabin assigned booking so that they are sure you are put in a cabin that has bedding for your entire party.

Sometimes if you are not familiar with the vocabulary it can make booking a cruise a little difficult for you.  It’s best to call a travel agent who can help decipher through the lingo and also get you the best price for your cruise.

In the end the judge said a very important thing.  When booking a vacation be sure to go to a reputable agent who knows what they are talking about!

What Things Effect the price of my Hawaii Trip?

There are many different things that can effect the cost of your hawaii trip so here are some tips if you are trying to keep the cost of your trip down.

*Time of year.  Of course we have been over this many times.  December around the christmas holiday and the new year’s holiday is the most expensive time of year to travel to hawaii.  The air is typically higher at that time as well as no specials at the hotels, no reduced rates, no free nights etc.  If you want to go during this time it will be more than other times of the year, but booking it early can help to keep the cost of the trip down some.

The cheapest times to travel to hawaii will be in the fall, after labor day through even the beginning of december, say before the 15th of december.   May tends to have some good pricing as well.  Off season typically tends to be when the kids are in school.  So summer while not as high as holiday travel doesn’t necessarily tend to be at an all time low either.

*Days of travel.  Back to the days of travel.  Monday through thursday travel is typically best for better air prices.  If you can travel during the week this may help keep the costs down on your trip…as well as I tend to see better flight schedules during the weekdays.

*Choice of island.  Generally oahu is the cheapest island to visit accomodations wise.  Maui tends to be the highest for resorts as well as kauai.   The big island (kona/hilo) I would have to say runs a second to oahu in being the least expensive resorts.  If you are trying to keep your costs down in maui and are okay with a condo then that would be a way for you to go.

*Accomodations.  Deciding on the kind of accomodations you want is one of the bigger deciding factors on the price of the trip.  Of course if you want a 5 star resort it’s gonna be high versus a 2 star hotel and again on maui the condos run less expensive than the resorts do mostly because they are all 4 and 5 stars in maui.  But that isn’t the only thing that can effect the cost.  Room category at the hotel can also play a big part in the price.  Many people really want a nice 5 star resort however if you don’t have to have an oceanview or oceanfront you can certainly keep some of the cost down by getting a cityview or gardenview yet stay in a very nice resort.

Another thing that makes it nice in the off season is many times you can find free upgrades on hotel categories.  So you may just get an oceanview for the price of a gardenview at some hotels when they run those specials.

If you are doing a multi-island trip you can switch it up.  You don’t have to go 5 star all the way and oceanfront all the way.  If going to oahu maybe cut back and take a cityview for a few days while there as you probably won’t be in the room much there to enjoy it and then go and take that oceanfront on maui or kauai.  I even have customers take a 5/6 star resort in maui and then take a 3 star hotel in oahu for a few days, knowing they will probably be out and about while on oahu anyways.

*Car rentals.  While it is nice to have a jeep or a convertible in hawaii and yeah it may not add a whole lot to the package..you can still save a few dollars by taking a smaller economy or compact car.  Convertibles/jeeps/SUV’s run the highest priced cars besides of course specialty cars.  Depending on how long your trip is you could save a nice chunk of change there to be spent elsewhere.  Think about it..would you rather stay in a 2 star hotel and drive a jeep or convertible or maybe drive a small car and upgrade the hotel a little bit?

*Food costs.  Many hotels offer specials with breakfast daily included.  Sometimes this can save you some money as many times I see the special with breakfast at  some hotels is less than the room only or even just a very minimal amount more than the room only.  It may add a little to your package price but in the end is worth it, in most cases but not all.  So ask if there are any hotels with breakfast specials and have your travel agent compare the price of room only and room with breakfast daily.

While you may have a picture in your mind of what you want on your hawaii trip and it sounds great, in reality sometimes when you let your imagination run wild and think up many things that you have to have, secluded beach area, pool with waterslide, oceanfront rooms, these things do add up.  Sometimes it helps if you sit down and think about your budget and what realistically fits in your budget.  If an oceanfront room is important to you, hey take a 3 star hotel middle of the road with an oceanfront view room.  But if a big huge resort with waterslide, spa and all the works is important to you but you can live without the oceanview to keep your costs down to meet your budget hey take a 5 star resort with a gardenview.

Set your priorities in place.  If you can afford to go all the way then go for it.  But if you are on a budget like many of us are then decide what is the most important things and have an agent try to get you as much of what you really want for the price you would like as well.

Remember fall is the best time to travel to hawaii.  So if you still want to come to hawaii fall of 2007 , there are still many great deals to be had.  If I had to say the time of year that was easiest to get a last minute good deal to hawaii, it would definately be the fall.  So don’t think it’s too late for you this year!

How do I chose which island to visit for my hawaiian vacation.

When getting new calls for hawaii vacations, I often find that a lot of people want to come to hawaii but have trouble deciding which island they would like to visit or try to do too many islands in a shorter period of time.  Generally my rule of thumb is depending on how many nights you are planning on staying may determine how many islands you should have in your itinerary.

With 4-5 nights –suggested just one island
6 + nights–2 islands
9+ nights–3 islands
12+ nights–4 islands

Unless doing a hawaii cruise.  The shortest length of cruise is 7 nights for hawaii and will begin and end in oahu and go to maui, kauai and the big island (both kona and hilo).  So if wanting to see as many islands as you can in the shortest period of time a cruise is the way to go.  With 7 nights air/land package it is not possible to see that many islands in that period of time.

But how do you chose which island or islands you would like to visit?

Well for starters if you don’t know what island you want to visit we generally ask some questions to get a better feel for what you are looking for.

Things like..

*are you traveling with children? and how old are they?
*Are there any main activities that you really wanted to see while in hawaii?
*Do you want to stay away from the city and prefer a quieter island? or do you like the nightlife aspect as well as seeing the beauty of hawaii?
*Is a great beach in close proximity important to you?

These sorts of things are important in deciding which island you should visit.

For Oahu it is the most citylike.  So for those wanting away from a city oahu is probably not the place to go unless you chose to stay at the few resorts outside of waikiki, however if you are looking for a more moderate or budget price then waikiki for price sake is the best way to go.  Sometimes though people don’t want too much city but they want to see many things that are only found on that island such as Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural center, diamond head crater and recently a lot of requests to do the swim with dolphins activity which is at sea life park on oahu, then well if most of those things are on your list for hawaii then really you will have to go to oahu.  If you are having enough time to do 2 islands though you can certainly go to oahu to see all those activities in which you had wanted and then fly to a quieter island next.

Generally traveling with children I suggest oahu or maui as those 2 islands normally have more for children expecially younger children to do and keep busy.

If beach is a big factor then generally I go with maui and oahu also.  The big island is more so known for their active volcano and not so much their beach.  There are a few properties that have beautiful beaches, but often times you will find while a hotel may be oceanfront, doesn’t necessarily mean the beach is swimmable sandy beach on their property.  Kauai there are also many places where the beach is not swimmable because of the reef and sometimes the currents also tend to be strong.  I say down in poipu area the beaches are the most swimmable (south kauai).  Maui has so much beach and many properties in maui are oceanfront or very close to it as well as oahu you can find swimmable beaches just about anywhere you go.  There are many surfing beaches such as the north shore and sandy beach so again you need to watch for posted signs of very high surf as if you are inexperienced it could be dangerous for you.

I think of kauai as kind of an outdoorsy island.  You see a lot of lush greenery, but there are many outdoor activities to do there.  Tubing adventure, hiking, ziplining, ATV riding and horseback riding.  This island would be great for people who are active and like to do things like that as well as romantic, quiet for those honeymooners and anniversary couples who really want a quiet romantic vacation with great scenery.

For maui I think of it is a great place to enjoy beach as well as a little city life.  It’s definately not as citylike as oahu is though.  With a lot of great beaches to go , yet being able to go to lahaina on front street for some oceanfront shopping and dining, kihei with outdoor shopping as well.  They have a place there that is great for sounvenier shopping, I kind of compare it to a miniature international marketplace that is in waikiki.  As well as great bars and grills located right there in the area.  I know a lot of people say I’m not there to go shopping in hawaii, but it’s not typical shopping like at a mall.  There are even some things that you can’t find other places.  I know my favorite store in maui "serendipity" is only found on the island of maui and they make beautiful hawaiian print clothes for women.  The nice thing is they are not touristy clothes, they are the kinds of things the locals would wear so you could very well take them home and use them where you are from as well for a nice evening out.

For Oahu it is the most citylike and well for me personally my two favorites are maui and oahu.  Oahu will always have a special place in my heart because that is my home.  While it may be citylike it has so much to offer and really is a beautiful place.  You can find just about anything and everything you want on oahu.  Shopping is great, nightlife is great, beaches are great, food is wonderful!  So for those wanting some of both I suggest oahu.  While a lot of people say I don’t want to go to the city, I do get my share of those that say I dont’ want something too quiet and I do like nighlife as well.  Then definately oahu would be my choice of islands.  Also generally if you are on a budget oahu tends to be the least expensive island to visit.

The Big Island.  The Big Island for me is for those wanting to see an active volcano.  maybe go star gazing at the NASA scope.  Enjoy some rounds of golf. Not a lot of night life, not a lot of shopping, not a lot of city.  But again if you are looking for a lot of beach time and just want to walk out of your hotel and be at the beach, unless you are willing to spend a little more for some place like the hapuna beach or maybe the marriott then the big island is not the place for you.  If you are okay driving a little ways to get to the beach and don’t have to be necessarily able to walk right out from your hotel then the big island would be fine for you.  However also we do get a lot of inquires for " all inclusive" hawaii.

As we have gone over many times, we do have an all inclusive oahu package 6 nights/ 7 days, includes, transfers, meals, and activities.  There are multi island all inclusive packages depending on the length of stay will depend on what islands they visit.  9 nights usually oahu, kauai and maui, 12 nights usually oahu, kauai, maui and the big island.  However generally with air those packages can run about $3500.00 per person.  The resorts used are nice 5 star properties in those packages.  Or the kona village resort which is located on the big island in kona.  This resort is all meals included, non motorized water sports, they have a beach on property and they also offer their luau at a very discounted rate for their guests.  Many people do inquire about that property and if wanting something like that then the big island is where you will have to stay.

Lanai is known as the luxury island.  Molokai and Lanai I say if you want to get away from it all.  Go to someplace very quiet, you love to golf, and just want to sit out and relax on the beach with just about no one around to bother you then molokai and lanai may be the place for you.  Keeping in mind there are 2 hotels in lanai.  So if you are looking for a budget vacation then lanai is not the place for you.  Both properties in lanai are four seasons so you won’t find a "budget" hotel there.

So when deciding a travel agent can help you make those decisions, but it helps if you think about what you want to do beforehand.  I get so many that say I just want to go to the beach.  Well I mean you could do that on many islands so it doesn’t exactly help us to help you choose which island if that is all we have to go on unless you already know which island you want to visit.

Day trips are also a possiblity.  I have done many day trips for people adding them to their itineraries.  I have had people staying in oahu, but wanting to see the volcano so I get them a roundtrip flight from honolulu to hilo and a car for the day.  People going from oahu to kauai to do the movie tour they really wanted to do in kauai, so same there.  I have even had people staying in maui for a wedding, but wanting to do the dolphin encounter on oahu.  So we booked their flights, got them a car and booked their dolphin swim for them…when they were done they flew back to maui that evening and continued the rest of their trip.  So it’s not unheard of to do a day trip to another island just for that day.  The flights are short only about 35-45 minutes depending on which island to which and if doing a day trip, probably no bags makes the travel even easier and quicker for you.  That is usually what I suggest if majority of the things you want to do are on one island, but there is just one thing you want to do on another island.

So if you have done your research and know what you want to do that is helpful for travel agents to help you decide which island(s) you should visit.

Tips to get you by on your hawaii vacation

These are just some tips to get you by in hawaii.  Now that I live away from home I see that things are a little different than where you might be from.

-Driving.  Speed limits in hawaii are not as high as they are say on I-95.  The highest speed limit is 55 mph on the freeways, residential areas are normally 15-25mph, and highways 35-45mph.  Don’t speed.  You are on vacation, take it easy, relax and enjoy.  Life in hawaii is not face paced like most other places.  DO NOT HONK YOUR HORN!!  That is not appreciated in hawaii.  I had to get used to that when I moved.  People honk their horns like it’s second nature here.  I’m not used to hearing so much horn honking.  Really the only time you hear horn honking in hawaii is..1)  someone sees a friend, calling for a horn honking and a "howzit brah", 2) in the event it’s really necessary , say someone is about to back up into you, you honk to let them know you are there.   Other than that, don’t horn honk and cut off.  Remember the speed limits are not as high in hawaii, people in hawaii probably don’t drive quite as fast as you are used to.  Be respectful you are now in their state and obey the rules and the way the people are used to driving. It’s also for your safety.  There may be many roads around the cliffs with bends and turns…you wont’ be used to it and know what turn to expect next, so drive slowly and be safe. Drive with Aloha!

-Also going along with the driving thing.  I waitressed for many years in hawaii in a local restaurant and we would get visitors all the time.  Of course asking for directions, with their maps..so we were quite used to giving out directions, however…most times people were asking us directions using numbers.  In hawaii most times the locals will know how to get there by using the street name.  Now I know a lot of people didn’t want to ask by street name because they couldn’t say it…well just spell it we will get the idea.  Big one on Oahu is "Kalanianaole Hwy"   It’s actually said just how it’s spelled, but I know it’s looks like a hard one.  I am now getting used to using numbers for directions..so I too have to change my customs here from what I was used to back home in hawaii.

-As the same as where you are probably from.  Don’t liter.  We try to keep the aina (land) clean and beautiful for many visitors to come and enjoy for years to come.

-Obey all posted signs.  When going to the beach if you see signs out, with flags, etc.  pay attention to them and read them.  They are there for a reason.  It could be high surf or jelly fish.  This could really help to keep you safe and help you to have a happy trip.  Who wants to get stung by a jelly fish on their vacation?  Also don’t try to be niele "nosy" when visiting certain areas.  For instance the blowhole in oahu.  signs posted, don’t go over the wall, I mean common sense without a sign would tell you not to do it anyway, but if the sign says not to go over the wall, DON’T DO IT.  Hawaii is very much known for it’s natural beauty.  There is no controling mother nature so please obey all posted signs.  They are for your safety.

-As for common questions…Yes we speak english, we drive on the same side of the car and the same side of the road, we are part of the United States, you don’t need to call internationally when calling from or to hawaii, and our lanes on our roads are just the same as anywhere else.  We drive the same kind of cars that everyone else does, so in turn our lanes have to be just as big to fit cars in them.   You may encounter back roads which may seem smaller, plenty people park on the side of the road in hawaii, so if you go down a street where many residents park on the side of the road, then yeah it might seem smaller, but the car will fit with no problem.

All in all, the people of hawaii are a friendly and beautiful people full of aloha they would love to share with all.  Be respectful of them and their culture, obey all signs, it’s there for your safety.  Relax and take your time and enjoy your vacation.  Your thoughts of hawaii is that it is a relaxing paradise, well then do just that…relax and enjoy the beautiful islands of hawaii.

Should I pre-book my activities for my Hawaii Trip?

This year people are taking our advice of pre-booking some of their activities before their trip in their pacakges.

I get asked this a lot when putting together packages.  The answer I give to people especially those who aren’t sure they want to pre-book their activities is…Sit down and think about what you really want to do.  The things you really don’t want to miss and would just be devastated if you missed.  Some people are devastated if they miss a great luau, others it’s very important to get on a helicopter tour, other really want to zipline.  Well those things yes pre book those things.  If you are definately going to do it then why not book it ahead of time?  Most times you will be paying less than if you wait to book it at the hotel and you are sure you are reserved a spot.  Now there are activities like say the pearl harbor tour on oahu that pretty much have ample availability all the time, but there are many tours that could very well be sold out while you are there.  Big one is the Old Lahaina Luau on maui which I mentioned in the last blog.  Sometimes no matter if we suggest to book it ahead of time people say I’ll just wait…and upon return sadly the activity was booked during their stay and they missed out..what do you do?  well you come back to hawaii again is all you can do.  Especially if you are doing a multi-island package…say you are in hawaii for 9 nights….you have 3 nights on oahu, 3 nights on maui and 3 nights on the big island…you want to go to the old lahaina luau…oops it’s sold out the 3 days you are in maui , but wow it’s open for the days you will be on another island…see when you have less days on a particular island, it lessens your chances of certain activities being open while you are there.

I did have some customers that maybe in my opinion, planned a little too much during their stay.  Yes I have had a few honeymooners, with the most thoughtful grooms doing the planning, and was sent a spreadsheet of their plans for their trip.  While one of them looked actually good to me, with activities and then some down time also to enjoy the beach, etc.  I did get one that tried to plan 2 activities every day…In my opinion I don’t think that would have been very enjoyable as you would be on the go constantly, and then end up needing a vacation from your vacation.  I do believe there is such a thing as too many activities pre planned for your trip.

Also, I get asked don’t they have cheap tours while you are there?  Well they could, and sometimes you do see cheap actvities vendors, but don’t be fooled…most of the time they are trying to sell you something or there is a catch to it…if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.

So the short answer is yes you should pre book some or all of your activities ahead of time.  What will it hurt?  You pay the same or less than booking it there and you will be sure that you reserve your space.  Often times I will discuss the activities while doing the package especially for a last minute pacakge so I can try to get them all their activities confirmed at the same time, OR…if you are booking far in advance you can take a breather and sit back and really look at the information and see what you would like to do.(again going back to the why you should book in advance, giving you time to really plan out your trip)..then what I will do is normally send out some activities that I think may appeal to my specific customers with prices and descriptions and let them discuss and decide, then adding them into the package before their trip.  Another important thing also is when checking the tours, not all tours go everyday, there are some luaus like the royal hawaiian that only operates on monday and wednesday…some sunset cruises that only operate maybe 3 times a week for example, then you want to make sure you have someone organizing your tours for you to make sure it’s planned on the days the tour operates, which is another thing…You are on one island for 3 nights, you pre booked your luau which operates nightly , then you get there and want to now book your sunset cruise.but wait it operates tuesday, thursday and saturday…you booked your luau for thursday but you are only there wednesday, thursday and friday…now what?  This is why it is good to have an agent assist you with these things and pre book the tours you really would not want to miss.

Should I wait to book my hawaii trip?

How far in advance should I book my trip to hawaii?  Should I wait for the prices to drop?  Common questions on when booking a hawaii trip is appropriate.

Well for a holiday season, especially christmas you really should be looking about 1 year in advance or as soon as pricing becomes available.  Keep in mind airfare pricing and schedules are usually put out by airlines 330 days from the present date and hotels generally don’t take hotel reservations more than 1 year in advance.  So while it is good to book early, there is such a thing as too early when trying to book a trip.  For other times of the year 6 months in advance would be a good time to book, but also keep in mind, the earlier you book, normally with our packages the longer you have to make payments on it , so you don’t have to put down a lot of money up front.

Another reason not to wait long, goes right back to the class of service with the airlines.  From all these blogs the class of service just seems to be the biggest pestering thing in these package prices…well it’s true.  why take the chance of the airfare going down and by that time the lowest class of service is sold out so now the airfare went up anyways?  The waiting game doesn’t always pay off.  If you book something in a higher class of service and a lower class opens up we can alway switch the class of service to get the lower price.  We have done it many times.  This is another reason why last minute trips are not always the best way to go.  Many times the airfare is higher, unless you get lucky and something good is still open, but sometimes it’s almost like you have to settle for what accomodations are open.  Wouldn’t you rather have a full selection of choices than wait and everything is booked up?  Think about it, everyone else wants the best deals too and the most for their money so of course if there is a good deal they will snag it , if you don’t.  Most people think well if the hotel has rooms open at the last minute they will sell it to me for cheaper so the room wont’ go empty…well I’ve yet to see the hotel give a cheaper price at the last minute just to fill a room, in fact it usually works quite the opposite…when you see promotions, they only give so many rooms at that promotion price, so often times at the last minute, yes they may have rooms open, but they are no longer offering it with the 5th night free or for a promotional rate because that alloted amount of rooms they were given to sell at that price are already booked so guess what no free night for you because you waited too long.

Many people are looking for good prices to hawaii for christmas and say I’ll just wait til the prices go down.  Every year it’s the same, you wait for the prices to go down, well christmas time is the most expensive time of year to visit hawaii and well the prices are more than likely just not going to drop for christmas..so if you get a decent deal jump on it right away and definately don’t wait on a holiday season package for the price to go down, chances are, it’s not going to happen.  Hotels just don’t give deals during the holiday season, so they are not going to miraculously drop their prices at the last minute and more than likely they will be sold out by the time you get around to booking it..leaving you with one of two options…the most budget hotels that you probably wouldn’t have chosen if you had a choice or the very most expensive hotel that you weren’t planning on paying that much for.

Prices can change at the blink of an eye.  Lately Ive been doing quotes and the next day the class of service is already gone up.  So if you are looking for something at the last minute and you get a good deal, don’t even wait til the next day to book it, you should get on the phone and do it right then because that is where I see the most prices go up at the blink of an eye when the planes are starting to fill up and the class of service keeps going up and up until the flight is sold out.

An example, I sent out a cruise quote one day.  Understandably the customer had questions and I responded as quickly as I could to her questions and sent her all the information she needed.  She waited and in waiting of course came up with more questions and more questions.  The price I got for her I thought was a really good price and was surprised she did not book it sooner.  Well after a lot of foot dragging finally said okay now that I have read all of this and that I am ready to book my cruise.  Well I check availability online, call the cruiseline, guess what?  The cruise is now completely sold out for that date and she was not flexible.  See perfect example of a good deal that someone neglected to jump on right away and ended up with nothing.  Cruises are the same could be gone in the blink of an eye.  The groups department for Norwegian Cruiseline can pull up to 300 cabins at one time.  That is a nice chunk of the ship gone in a matter of minutes.

So I guess the point of this blog is don’t wait to book your trip.  Hey sometimes we get a good deal at the last minute…I’m not saying it can’t happen…but why take the chance of maybe getting a good deal rather than locking in a good deal early?  Plus it gives you time to plan your activities out after the big portion is out of the way…because yes, there are times when activities will sell out ahead of time too.  Big one is the old lahaina luau in maui which during a busy season can sell out over a month in advance.

Myth busters of booking travel through wholesale.

I decided to write this blog because I do go on travel forums and I have been surprised that there are misconceptions about booking your trips through a travel agent who book wholesale.  One thing I noticed about the forums is that resident experts giving advice are the travelocity and expedia experts.

One thing that was mentioned is that if you book wholesale and not direct with the hotel or airlines you are always first to get bumped on a flight if it’s overbooked or first to get walked from a oversold hotel.  WRONG!  That is not true.  Not to say it never happens to people who book through wholesale but it’s not the reason it happens.  First of all when you book a bulk fare ticket, the ticket agent, reservationist, gate agent can’t even see how much you paid for the ticket so how are they to determine who paid more?  Their rebuttal …that they can certainly tell it was booked in a bulk fare.  Okay …that may be true but no one ever said bulk fares are ALWAYS cheaper than published fares..because it’s not true…sometimes they are and sometimes they are not it really depends.  The hotels also do not walk you because you didn’t book it through them either.  Again I’m not saying it never happens to people who book wholesale, but it’s rare.  Myself personally have not had any customers walked from a hotel and have only had one customer bumped on an overbooked flight which they were compensated for and got them on another flight.

Another thing I saw mentioned was frequent flyer miles.  Now I’m not privy to the online agencies like expedia and travelocity apparently according to the "resident experts" you can’t get FF miles on many flights booked through online agencies…which may be true, but I also heard mentioned it’s because it’s bulk fares and they are cheaper so they don’t allow you to get FF miles on many of their fares…well that my friend is WRONG.  It’s not a bulk fare that cannot get FF miles.  My customers all get their miles when I book their bulk fares so it’s not true.

Payments and restrictions on bulk fares.  I had mentioned to a person who had asked a question about booking with an online agency that they may consider a travel agent, may be able to get a better price or match it, be able to answer any questions they may have, help if there is an enroute problem or even problem beforehand and may be able to book a bulk fare which won’t even need to be paid in full upfront.  Again the "resident experts" said I was wrong and that there are no airfares that you can book and not have to pay for upfront in full and if you don’t the flight will sell out.  …WRONG AGAIN.  You most certainly can book a bulk fare with a deposit and pay in full at a later date..now this depends on how far in advance you are booking your trip.  If it’s last minute well then yes you have to pay in full..but if it’s booked in advance you have until usually 35 or 45 days prior to pay the balance for the pacakge.  We do them everyday.

Missing a flight or canceled flights day of travel.  If you miss your flight, quite frankly a travel agent , a good one anyway will try to help you out and work with the airlines, sometimes get the wholesaler involved if they have to, but in the end the airline has the final say on what can be done.  A travel agent does not have the power to just put you on another flight, we can’t just take the money back and book you another carrier for things like that.  Sure you should get your travel agent involved for some help, but be courteous because remember YOU missed your flight and there is only so much a travel agent can do for you, we can plan you a perfect trip but we can’t get you there on time.  I did mention this in the forum and well you are better off using an agent in this situation, which your agent will just have to contact the airline and try to work it out for you.  Now if you book it with expedia or travelocity, you might as well just go ahead and start negotiations with the airline yourself.  I don’t know why people put themselves through that as they mention they stay on the phone with these online agencies for hours aggrevating themselves even more when either yourself or they could have been working on it with the airlines.  Basically you simply ask them if you miss your flight if they can get you out on another flight, if they say yes great, if they say on standby okay, that is the same answer we will get.  Like my last blog said there is only so much control a travel agent has on bookings.  We are not miracle workers but we do try.  Remember if you miss your flight you are at the mercy of the airlines.  They said the airline said I had to go back to expedia to fix it, yeah well depends who is standing at the counter telling you this because I have had the situation at the airport the airline says contact the wholesaler, the wholesaler says we can’t do anything if the flight has left without them the airlines have to do it and back and forth, well ultimately the airline is the one that does have to try to fix it for you…or I wouldn’t say "has to" but normally they will.  Generally the airline will start trying to fix it, but once in awhile you get that one agent who says no go back to the person who booked it for you..well what can we do?  we can’t just move you to another flight of theirs..they have to do it, but we can certainly try to make phone calls for you as that is our job to make sure your trip runs as planned but we can’t make promises because we too are at the mercy of the airline.

I just wanted to blog about some of the untruths that have apparently been spreading on forums about wholesale and show that instead of listening to the "resident experts" on travelocity or expedia you may want to try asking a real travel agent about these things before just taking any old persons word for it.  Booking through a travel agent is not the same as booking with an online agency and should not be treated as so.

I hope this busts any travel myths that people may have had or any wrong information they may have gotten from people who were really trying to help, but not giving all the facts or only the facts of one type of travel booking system.

Common Travel Questions for Agents!

I decided to write this blog about common questions we get asked a lot after itineraries are booked.  There are times when travel agents have no control over certain things on itineraries once booked.  We do try our best to fix any problems but there are just times when it can’t be done.

Seat assignments:  Seat assignments cannot always be chosen.  In most cases they can.  Keep in mind if you are booking at the last minute we can’t guarantee you will get a seat you want on the plane.  If many people have already booked and been assigned a seat or already picked their seats well then it becomes a case sometimes of just having to take whats open. Some airlines only pre assign 20%-25% of their seats ahead of time and will not pre assign anymore once that percentage is already assigned.  There is nothing yourself or your agent can do at that point to assign the seat.  It’s airline rules and they can’t do it.  Some airlines are also saying they are charging a fee to change your seat if you call it in.  A lot of airlines will allow us or yourself to change seat assignments online, which will show you a map of available seats to choose from.

Schedule changes: Sometimes when you book a flight later there may be a schedule change.  They are not always bad changes and if they are we try our best to get a better schedule for you, but it’s not always possible.  An airline may change their route, add a stop , cancel some flights and put you on another flight.  We also have no control over that.  If we can change it and get a better flight for you we always will do so, but sometimes it’s not possible especially if they make a last minute change.  Keep in mind, it is not your agent who made that change and the agents have no idea the airlines will be making that change as normally the airlines don’t know themselves until they decide to do the change.  It can be annoying or upseting to the traveler, but if you had booked those same flights on your own your schedule still would have been changed and is no fault of a travel agents.

Hotel requests:  Most of the time the hotels honor our requests, but keep in mind that is just what they are, Requests.  We will always ask for you if you want one king bed or 2 doubles, a higher floor, rooms close to each other, etc.  It is up to the hotel to honor those requests in which they do try their best to do.  Some hotels have guaranteed connecting rooms , however they do charge extra per night to get that.  Sometimes in the range of $40.00 a night to get a guaranteed connecting room.  Again we do put in those kinds of requests to the hotels but it’s on a request basis and can’t always be helped although most often they do honor our requests as much as they can.

Plane problems:  Sometimes there are mechanical problems on an aircraft which may delay your flight.  I had a customer that they were enroute to hawaii and had to turn around for mechanical problems and didnt’ arrive til early the next morning.  Well mechanical problems can’t be helped and in that case is no fault of the agent, and usually of the airline.  Planes are machines and we all know machines don’t always work the way we want them to.  They will make a decision to turn around if it’s closer or delay the flight til the problem is fixed.  Your safety however upset you may be over a delay is first and foremost.  Now the FAA has regulations for certain things, however for mechanical problems they are not regulated to reimburse anything to you for a loss of monies for hotel stay, car rental, etc, because it is out of their control.  They are however regulated to reimburse things that are in their control like overbooking a flight (which is also not the fault of a travel agent).  We are not the ones who overbook the flight, it’s the airlines who do it and in that case they are regulated by the FAA for some kind of compensation.  The compensation is different for different circumstances.  If they get you on another flight soon after well then they have done their duty.  On the FAA website there are the guidelines of what the FAA regulates of the airlines in certain situations.  Even when the FAA does not regulate the airlines to compensate they sometimes will do so.  I have had an airline switch a flight to the next day because of a bad schedule change giving them an extra day at no charge.  I have also had an airline compensate with travel vouchers for mechanical problems which they did not have to do, but did so anyways after a letter I wrote to them.  Remember kill em with kindness.  Do not come at them with aggression and yelling and upset.  If you nicely explain your situation and disappointment without being rude, you are more likely to get a response and some kind of compensation than if you are rude to them.  Trust me it works!

Name Changes:  This is the most recent problem I have been having.  Complete name changes are not allowed on air tickets.  Once it’s booked it has to be canceled and rebooked to have a complete name change done.  Now sometimes the problem is at that time it may only be open in a higher class of service at the time of the change.  It doesnt work like if I cancel I can rebook that same class of service right away.  The ticket is canceled and goes back into circulation which can take hours.  In that time someone else could already book it before we can.  It’s a little more complicated than just cancel and rebook the same ticket right away.  Once it is released back into circulation remember that lower class of service ticket is open to everyone, ourselves, the airline, online agencies as well as other travel agents.

I just wanted to write this blog to make travelers aware that there are some limitations on things travel agents can do and we dont’ have control of everything especially when it comes to airlines.  For some things like seat assignments and schedule changes even the reservationist for the airlines dont have any control over that.  We do try our best to get you what you want, it may not always be completely satisfactory to you, but we do try our best because of course we want you happy.  We are on your side, but there are limitations!  We can’t make hotels waive fees for things like internet or parking,or airlines waive penalties for changes, which I have been asked to do.  That is not fair to ask your agent to plea bargain with the hotel over fees that everyone else is charged for.  I wanted to do this blog to make travelers aware of things and to be a little more educated on how the travel industry works.  Most travelers arent’ aware of many things as well as I wasn’t either until I came into the industry and wish someone would have shared the knowledge with me when I was a travel consumer myself.

I also did not write this blog to pass blame and be a dont’ blame me blame them blog, but there are many things consumers think is logically easy, but they aren’t.  We have rules we also have to follow with airlines/hotels etc. and we can’t just do whatever we want either, no matter how much we would love to just to make it easier, we also have to follow rules and regulations, but whoever said life was easy right?

I hope this helps anyone who had any questions about some of the topics above.  I find myself answering these kinds of questions on a daily basis so I assumed a lot of people don’t know these things and wanted to share with everyone.
