Ted’s Bakery: Home of the Chocolate Haupia Pie

Ted’s Bakery on the North Shore of Oahu gives an extended meaning to the term, “bakery.” The assortment of glazed pies and frosted pastries never fails to make mouths water, and to add to those cravings, the Sunset Beach eatery also offers plate lunches, sandwiches, salads, smoothies and acai bowls. It’s become a popular hangout inspired by the surrounding surf and sea, with sandy bare feet and painted wave murals adding to the casual-beach atmosphere.

A savory slice of Ted’s famous pies: chocolate, haupia and whipped cream baked in a flaky crust.

We go there whenever we’re on the North Shore because it’s conveniently located next to one of our favorite surf spots. There are only a handful of eateries on that stretch of the North Shore, which is probably why the line of customers at Ted’s is usually out the door. The inside looks similar to a mini mart with to-go meals in the refrigerators, perfect for a beach picnic or for the drive out of the country and back into town. Most people order the freshly-made items from the menu, which requires a bit of a wait, so be patient.

Some, like my parents, make the hour-plus drive to the North Shore just for a savory slice of Ted’s chocolate haupia cream pie. They can also be bought at supermarkets, but having them fresh out of the oven makes all the difference in taste. Depending on the season, Ted’s refrigerator may also be filled with slices (or whole pies) of strawberry or blueberry cream, peach bavarian cream, pineapple cheese and pumpkin haupia cream.

You could also cool off with an acai bowl, topped with fresh fruit and granola.

Fortunately, Ted’s recently added more umbrella-covered tables outside of the bakery. Before that, you’d see people eating and standing or sitting on the curb near the road. I used to feel like a hawk stalking its prey whenever I waited for one of the five tables to open up. Now there is less stress and more time for enjoying the food.
