But if you want our fast opinion, here it is: We typically recommend summer as the best time to visit Kauai, Hawaii. That’s around June – September. 

We’ll go into more detail about why below – and we’ll give some exceptions in case you might want to visit during a different time.

Before you know the best time of year to visit Kauai, you need to know if Kauai is the best island to visit. Here’s what you can look forward to when you travel to the Garden Isle. 

• Kauai is home to the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon, two of the most beautiful places to sightsee in Hawaii.
• The south shore of Kauai has sunny beaches where you can lounge, play, and explore. 
• The north shore of Kauai has scenic cliffs and gorgeous beaches.
•  Kauai is home to the only large, navigable river in Hawaii – the Wailua River. This is a great area to take a boat tour or kayak along the water. 
• There are coffee plantations and botanical gardens to tour on Kauai.
• Have you seen the Reels and TikToks where people are tubing through the Hawaii jungle? That’s on Kauai!
• Kauai has lots of great hiking trails and paths for all levels. 
• Lihue, Kauai, has a Walmart, Target, and other “mainland” staples. However, the rest of the island has a small-town vibe with small businesses and quaint atmospheres. 
• As far as accommodations go, Kauai has large resorts, smaller hotels, bed & breakfasts, and vacation rentals. 

5 Reasons We Love Summertime in Kauai

Earlier, we reported that summer was our favorite time to visit Kauai. This is the best time for lots of outdoor adventures throughout Hawaii. Check out these top 5 reasons why we love summer months in Kauai, and then stick around to find out if you’re an exception to our summertime recommendation. 

1. Better conditions to explore the Na Pali Coast

One of our favorite activities on Kauai is exploring the Na Pali Coast. This stretch of shoreline along the north side of the island is incredibly scenic, with towering cliffs and glistening waters. The most popular way to explore the coast is on a boat trip, and conditions may be too rough to enjoy that in the wintertime, when the waters are rougher and the area is more prone to rain. 

In the summer months, tours are more consistent, with calm waters and fantastic conditions for boating and kayaking. Less rain is also favorable if you prefer to explore the Na Pali Coast on foot via one of its advanced hiking trails. 

2. Snorkel on the North Shore

Some of Hawaii’s best snorkeling spots are along Kauai’s north shore, but you have to time your visit right. While calm days appear year-round, we see them most often during the summer. See colorful marine life up-close as you snorkel along Tunnels Beach, Ke’e Beach, or Haena Beach Park. 

Pro Tip: The water is often calmest in the morning, so head out early for the best chance at 5-star snorkeling conditions. 

3. Safer Hiking

Kauai has so many gorgeous hikes, but many can become dangerous in the winter months due to increased rainfall. Flash flooding is one of the biggest risks of hiking during rainfall, but you could also encounter muddy, slippery spots and potential landslides. This is especially true in the deep jungle areas and on waterfall hikes. 

Summertime often sees less rainfall, reducing the risk of having to cancel a hike. 

4. Longer Days

You want to soak in every moment of your Hawaii vacation – why not plan to visit when the days are longer? 

In the summer, the sun rises at about 6 AM, and the sun sets around 7:15. 

In the winter, the sun rises around 7 AM and the sun sets around 6:00 PM. 

So you’re getting more than 2 extra hours of daylight added to your vacation every day. That’s a big difference if you plan on hiking or having a beach day. 

5. More Sunshine!

Ready to soak up the sun? Kauai can get pretty rainy in the winter months. We mentioned the dangers of hiking in the rain, but it can also put a damper on other activities – especially ones on the beach. Rain can also cancel helicopter tours, sour a luau, and ruin views. 

So, in the summer, more things can go to plan, and you can work on the tan. Sounds like a pretty good deal to us! 

When Summer is NOT the Best Time to Visit Kauai, Hawaii

Ok, now you know why we love summertime in Kauai so much. But it’s certainly not the only time to have a great visit. Here are a few reasons why you may want to travel here during the fall, winter, or spring…

You want to see whales

Whale watching is one of the top activities in Hawaii, and Kauai is an excellent spot for it – but only during the winter. Whale season in Hawaii runs from November through March, with peak viewing in January and February. If you want to see whales during your Kauai vacation, summer time is NOT the time for you. 

You want to avoid crowds

There is lots of space and beauty throughout Kauai, but in the summertime lots of the beaches and resorts can get busy with families enjoying summer break. If you want a more relaxed vacation experience with fewer children around, avoid summertime and Christmastime. 

You’re on a budget

Flights and hotels often have lower costs during the “off-season.” If you want to save some money on your Hawaii vacation, consider visiting in September, October, early November, early December, and early May. 

“Been there, done that”

If you’ve already checked a lot of stuff off your Kauai bucketlist, it might be time to visit during a different time of year. Come experience the rain that makes the island so verdant. Marvel at monstrous north shore waves. Experience a more quiet atmosphere. If you’re ready for something different, you may really love Kauai during the winter.
