Hawaii Aloha Travel > Blog > 30 Hawaii Adventures For Your Next Vacation

Hawaii is the perfect place for anyone who craves thrills and seeks out larger-than-life experiences. The varied landscapes turn the islands into a natural playground, a place to do all the things. And there are so many Hawaii adventures that await you here.

Whether you like simple experiences or want the biggest thrills possible, there is something for you during your Hawaii vacation. Ahead, we’re highlighting the top 30 Hawaii adventures for every type of traveler.

So pack your bags, charge up your cameras, and get ready for unforgettable memories across the Hawaiian islands.

1. See an Active Volcano

(HAWAII ISLAND)

Many visitors come to the Aloha State just to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. And it’s definitely worth island hopping for this Hawaii adventure. Kilauea often erupts, and when Halema‘uma‘u crater is filled with lava, it emits a unique glow that you have to see for yourself. Even when lava isn’t flowing, visiting the summit of Kilauea is still a great adventure, and an awesome way to learn about Earth’s volcanic activity.

2. Learn to Surf

(ALL ISLANDS)

It’s Hawaii’s hallmark sport: surfing. And learning to surf can be one of your biggest adventures in Hawaii. Waikiki is the most famous beach for beginner surfing, but there are hot spots for newbies throughout the islands. For example, the south shores of Kauai and Maui both have great surf schools, and a Kona surf school could be a great chance to learn the sport on the Big Island.

3. Drive the Road to Hana (a Hawaii Adventure Road Trip)

(MAUI)

Maui waterfalls on the raod to hana

This one tops the travel bucket list for many Maui visitors. The Road to Hana is a winding, 64-mile stretch of coastal road that takes you to one of Hawaii’s most remote and beautiful regions.

Plan a full day for this Hawaii adventure, as you’ll drive pretty slow and make many stops along the way. Or – even better – book a hotel room or campsite in Hana to turn it into a multi-day excursion.

4. Go for a Hike: The Classic Hawaii Adventure

(ALL ISLANDS)

While everyone should vacation their own way, it’s still hard to imagine a Hawaii vacation without a hike. There are great hikes on all Hawaii islands, and it really is a “choose-your-own-adventure.”

Choose an easy, paved hike, like in Waimea Valley or Maui’s ʻĪao Valley State Park. Or elect for something more advanced, like the trek to Mauna Kea’s summit. And there’s plenty in the middle, too.

Just make sure that you fully understand the demands of a hike, plan well, and don’t cross onto private property.

Here are some of our favorite Hawaii hikes:

  • Crater Rim Trail on the Big Island
  • Manoa Falls on Oahu
  • Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail on Oahu
  • Waimea Canyon Trail on Kauai
  • Waihee Ridge Trail on Maui

5. Sail along the Na Pali coast

(KAUAI)

I think that the Na Pali Coast is one of the most beautiful places in all of Hawaii. Towering sea cliffs, deep green valleys, and powerful waterfalls line Kauai’s northwest coast. There are many ways to see the Na Pali coast – you can book a helicopter tour or kayaking excursion, and very experienced hikers will even explore by foot.

But we recommend a sailing trip along the Na Pali Coast. Not only will this take you to the feet of these impressive sea cliffs, but you can also see some of the marine life and ocean landscapes that make Hawaii such a unique place.

6. Have a Beach Day

(ALL ISLANDS)

Families Enjoying Kailua Beach

Relax on a beach during vacation? Oftentimes, that’s the only Hawaii activity you need. Pack your beach gear, lunch, and beverage of choice, and hit the beach for a day of sunbathing, swimming, and sightseeing.

The best beaches get busy fast, so plan for an early morning if you want primo parking and the top spot on the sand. Or, wander over to the beach anytime for a relaxed visit. There’s no wrong way to do a Hawaii beach day, as long as you stay safe and respectful!

7. Swim in a Waterfall

(OAHU & ALL ISLANDS)

Hawaii’s waterfalls are nearly as famous as its beaches. And when conditions are right, you can take a dip in the beautiful natural pools.

Most waterfalls require a hike to access, and all pose some kind of danger. Still, one of the best places for a Hawaii waterfall swim is in Waimea Valley on Oahu. The easy, paved hike leads to a stunning waterfall with lifeguards and life jackets provided. You must pay to visit Waimea Valley, but we think it’s worth the cost since you get maintained grounds and supervised swimming.

Of course, Waimea Falls isn’t the only place for a freshwater swim in Hawaii. Maui’s Road to Hana has many trails leading to waterfalls. And on Hawaii Island, you can pay to access Kulaniapia Falls or Umauma Falls.

8. Ascend Diamond Head

(OAHU)

Diamond Head isn’t a remote hike, but it’s one of the most popular and interesting ones on Oahu. An uphill hike will take you along the crater’s rim, through military bunkers, and by a lighthouse. Plus, you’re rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Waikiki and beyond.

Be sure to reserve your visit to Diamond Head in advance!

9. Zipline Over the Jungle

(MAUI & ALL ISLANDS)

Hawaii Zipline Adventure

If you’ve never been ziplining, Hawaii is the perfect place to do this. Soar over the green jungles and take in incredible views of the Pacific Ocean.

One of our favorite Hawaii zipline courses is in West Maui. Kapalua Ziplines has excellent guides and offers up top-notch thrills and unbeatable views. The region of Kapalua is extremely scenic, So it’s fun to take in the sights in such a heart-pounding way.

You don’t have to visit Maui to zipline, though. Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island all have great courses that allow you to see the islands in a high-flying Hawaii adventure.

10. Go Whale Watching

(MAUI & ALL ISLANDS)

In the winter months, Hawaii’s waters are teeming with majestic whales. The channel between Maui, Molokai, and Lanai is the best place for whale watching in Hawaii. But you’ll likely see whales breaching and swimming throughout the islands.

Go on a whale-watching excursion for the best whale sightings. Spending the day on the water and seeing these massive creatures up close is an unbeatable Hawaii adventure. But, if you’re vacationing on a budget, you can see whales from shore too.

11. Snorkel Hanauma Bay

(OAHU)

Snorkeling is one of the top Hawaii adventures, and you can enjoy it nearly anywhere throughout the islands. However, one of the top spots to snorkel in Hawaii is at Hanauma Bay on Oahu. This is a popular place, and you must pay and make reservations to visit.

12. Sightsee from a Helicopter

(ALL ISLANDS)

Want to see Hawaii from a unique vantage point? A helicopter tour of the islands is an incredible adventure. See bustling Oahu from above, or leave from Maui and witness majestic waterfalls and the famous sea cliffs of Molokai. On the Big Island, you can see an active volcano from the sky. And Kauai’s cliffs, mountains, and canyons are an incredible sight from above.

13. Float Through Irrigation Canals (A Relaxed Hawaii Adventure)

(KAUAI)

Kauai was once the ultimate spot for growing sugarcane, and irrigation canals supplied water to the many plantations on the island. Today, sugarcane doesn’t dominate Kauai’s landscape, but many irrigation ditches remain. And, if you’re looking for a unique Hawaii adventure, a tubing excursion through the canals can’t be beat. Go deep in the jungle of Kauai as you gently float through the waterways. This is a lot of fun and a bucket-list experience for many Kauai visitors.

14. Stargaze at Mauna Kea

(HAWAII ISLAND)

Hawaii Forest and Trail Tour Bus with Stars. Mauna Kea, Hawai'i. August 2010.

Hawaii’s volcanic mountains are prime spots for stargazing. To marvel at the night sky, you should head to Mauna Kea. A few tours are permitted to take visitors to the summit after dark, but most experts agree that the best views of the night sky are from lower elevations – at the Mauna Kea Visitors Center. You’ll still be high (elevation 9,200 feet), but your eyes will have an easier time taking in the stars. Plus, you can drive yourself to the visitor center after dark. Only permitted tours are allowed to the summit at night.

15. Fly a Gyroplane

 (OAHU)

For a truly unique thrill, check out Gyroplane rides on Oahu. The 30-minute flight will take you above the island’s prettiest sights, without any doors or windows. Just you and the open air.

16. Ride Horseback for a Hawaii Adventure

(OAHU & ALL ISLANDS)

Looking for a lower-octane way to see the islands? Horseback riding is a fantastic activity to do during your Hawaii vacation, and there are lots of options for it, too! Kualoa Ranch on Oahu is one of the most popular places for an island-style trot, but the other islands all have various ranches with fantastic scenery.

17. Bike Downhill

(MAUI, OAHU, & KAUAI)

Watching the sunrise at Haleakala is already a big adventure. Get up while it’s still dark, drive to the top of a dormant volcano, and then watch the sunrise above the clouds. But if that’s not enough of a thrill for you, there’s a big adventure waiting for you: downhill biking.

Tour guides will drive you up the mountain, along with the bike that will carry you back to town. Watch the sunrise and then cruise downhill.

Maui’s the most popular spot for downhill biking, but you can also enjoy it with a guided group on Oahu and Kauai.

18. Have a Hang Gliding Adventure Over Hawaii

(OAHU & MAUI)

two people in a powered hang glider
Paradise Air, located at Dillingham Airfield, has two powered hang gliders, so guests can take lessons together.

Want to fly free over Hawaii’s gorgeous landscapes? Hang Gliding has long been one of the most exhilarating Hawaii adventures, and there are companies that offer it on both Oahu and Maui.

For an even bigger thrill, try out Oahu powered hang gliding, which takes you over land and sea in an AirBorne trike.

19. Surf on an Outrigger Canoe

(OAHU)

You don’t have to hop on a surfboard to ride Waikiki’s waves. Outrigger canoe surfing is a fun activity that will not only deliver excitement, but also give you a glimpse into Hawaii’s rich history.

Join the Waikiki Beach Boys for a trip out into the water, where you’ll paddle into Waikiki’s famous waves while taking in world-class views of the Honolulu skyline.

20.Try Local Foods (A Hawaii Foodie Adventure)

(ALL ISLANDS)

A Hawaii Poke Counter

Hawaii has some of the most unique foods that you may not find anywhere else. And there’s something for every taste bud, whether you’re an adventurous eater or prefer familiar flavors. Here are some of the most popular food adventures you can have in Hawaii:

  • Pick up a Poke bowl from a grocery store
  • Stop by 7-11 for a SPAM Musubi
  • Try a bowl of Saimin from McDonalds (where else can you get soup at McDonalds?)
  • Get a classic Hawaii plate lunch from a food truck (complete with rice & mac salad)
  • Go to a diner for a Hawaii Loco Moco
  • Have dessert with some coconut haupia, or a scoop of haupia ice cream
  • Find the Manapua Man for a steamed bun or other local bite

21. Snorkel at Molokini Crater

(MAUI)

Molokini Crater is another top snorkeling spot in Hawaii. This is an islet just south of Maui, and it’s one of the top things to do during a Maui vacation. You’ll access Molokini as part of a tour, most likely on a zodiac boat or catamaran. Then jump into the calm, protected waters and swim among vibrant marine life.

22. Parasail over Waikiki

(OAHU)

Here’s a water activity that you’re sure to love: parasailing over Waikiki. Hop aboard a boat and then fly high above the glistening waters. It’s a great way to take in the views of Waikiki while catching some thrills!

23. Rappel Down a Waterfall

(MAUI, KAUAI, & HAWAII ISLAND)

I’ve been rock climbing a handful of times, and every time, I think the best part is the rappel back to the ground. I must not be the only one who thinks that way, because there are great tour options on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island that offer waterfall rappelling.

Hook into rock climbing gear and descend the side of a flowing waterfall. It’s a fantastic way to get up close to nature while having a lot of fun!

24. Paddle in Kailua

(OAHU)

Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach are constantly ranked among the best beaches in the world, and one of the best water sports to do here is paddling. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and hit the water. You can paddle around the open water, or head to the Mokulua Islands that lay just offshore.

Enjoy this adventure in the morning for the best conditions.

25. Walk Through a Real Palace

(OAHU)

Iolani Palace on Oahu - things to do on Oahu when it rains

Hawaii is home to the only official royal residence in the United States. Iolani Palace was home to the Hawaiian monarchy, and it serves as a historical landmark and an icon of Hawaiian identity. You can tour Iolani Palace, and it is definitely worth the visit. Walk through the ornately decorated halls as you experience the grandeur and intrigue of Hawaii’s history.

26. Renew your Vows

(ALL ISLANDS)

Hawaii is a romantic place, and if the islands’ beauty moves you, a Hawaiian vow renewal could be a fantastic adventure. Have the beach wedding you always dreamed of (or started dreaming of recently!). Plan a big vow renewal far in advance, or book it on a whim. Your vow renewal can be as simple as a walk on the beach, or you can reserve an upscale venue.

Many companies offer all-in-one vow renewals that include photography, an officiant, and lei.

27. Shop at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

(OAHU)

Do you love to shop ‘til you drop? Oahu has many great shopping options, including high-end retailers in Waikiki, North Shore boutiques, and the many ABC stores throughout the island. One of the most unique places to shop is the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet.

Head out to the Pearl Harbor area on Wednesdays, Saturdays, or Sundays to peruse the 400+ vendors that carry souvenirs, snacks, antiques, clothes, and more.

28. Have a Hawaii Adventure Road Trip on the Big Island

(HAWAII ISLAND)

Saddle road hawaii adventure

Hawaii Island is the biggest of all the Hawaiian islands, making it the perfect spot for an island-style road trip. Adventure on Saddle Road, which was once the most dangerous paved road in America (it’s since been improved and is an enjoyable ride). Or, drive along the Hamakua Coast from Hilo to Waipio Valley Lookout on the Hamakua Heritage Corridor Drive.

Other popular routes on Hawaii Island include the Hawaii Belt Road and Crater Rim Drive, within Volcanoes National Park.

29. Go Deep Sea Fishing

(ALL ISLANDS)
Hawaii is a great place for outdoor sportsmen to reel in some thrills. If you want to dine on your own fresh catch, consider booking a fishing charter. Knowledgeable guides will provide the vessel and the gear so that you can try your hand at some Hawaii fishing. You might just catch a marlin, mahi mahi, or ono – all popular fish to eat here in the islands.

30. Swim with Sea Turtles

(ALL ISLANDS)

If you love marine life, you’re sure to be searching for Hawaii’s gorgeous green sea turtles. These creatures often make landfall at certain beaches (like Turtle Beach on Oahu’s north shore or Hookipa Beach on Maui). But there’s nothing like seeing them underwater.

A boat tour can take you to popular turtle spots off the coast, or you can head to calm waters and snorkel along the shoreline. Just be sure to stay at least 10 feet away from sea turtles in Hawaii and never ever touch them!
