Vacationing on Hawaii Island

On our latest Hawaii Vacation Connection Podcast, Aloha Bruce and Lanai Tabura discuss vacationing on Hawaii Island. Known most commonly as the “Big Island”, Hawaii Island suffered a significant drop in visitor arrivals in 2018 due to a several natural disasters. A volcanic eruption and several hurricanes and tropical storms menaced in 2018 and created some misconceptions about visiting the Big Island.

The major eruption of the Kilauea Volcano was chief among those disruptions. Aloha Bruce and Lanai note, however, that despite the large-scale destruction of property in the area of the eruption, the vast majority of the Big Island was unaffected. Volcanic haze, or “vog”, did make its way over other parts of the island as well as the rest of the Aloha State. But beyond the closure of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park during the eruption, it was and remains (beautiful) business as usual on the Big Island.

The national park has reopened. The 800 acres of new land formed by the eruption have created new tour opportunities for helicopter rides and hiking excursions. The iconic Volcano House has been renovated and remains a great value. Aloha Bruce and Lanai talk about the recently-completed renovation of the Hilton Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo, and the famous Ken’s Pancake House, both of which have been attracting visitors for decades.

We’ll also talk about some of the other major attractions to visit when Vacationing on Hawaii Island, such as scuba diving, coffee farms, and resorts like the Four Seasons at Hualalai and the Fairmont Orchid on Hawaii Island’s “sunshine coast”. The Westin Hapuna also comes up.

Aloha Bruce and Lanai offer local insight into the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and other attractions you can only get from Hawaii Aloha Travel and Secret Hawaii Tours. Lanai offers his unique expertise on Hawaii dining.
