With all the cruising you’ll be doing in Hawaii, it’s easy to rack up an expensive gas bill. That’s why more and more tourists turn to sustainable options for travel – whether it be taking the bus or renting an eco-friendly car.

Bio-Beetle Eco Rentals on Maui has become one popular option for the Valley Isle, where a bus system is not always available and walking would be even less of an option. The company offers hybrid, biodiesel (vegetable oil) and electric rental cars for about $199 per week. That’s pretty cheap, considering you won’t have to fill up as often.

According to Bio-Beetle’s website, each of its biodiesel rentals averages about 400 miles per tank (35-40 miles per gallon), with a Prius averaging a bit more. The company compared this to other rental car agencies that have cars averaging less than 20 miles per gallon.

It’s no secret that Hawaii’s gas prices are ridiculously higher than most places in the nation. Oil needs to be shipped overseas, so island motorists are at the mercy of oil companies. Basically, we pay what they say. It’s also not a secret that Hawaii overall is expensive, so why not cut down on at least one of those high expenses during your Hawaii vacation by renting a sustainable vehicle?

Plus, you’ll feel good about it. Not only will you be limiting your footprint, but you’ll be helping homeless animals as well. A portion of all sales goes toward animal rescue and shelters on Maui.
