Shoo, Fly! Don’t Bother Me.

I love everything about Haleiwa Joe’s on Oahu’s north shore. As the first of two locations to open in Hawaii, the restaurant has pretty much everything a customer needs – good food, good service, descent prices and oceanfront views.

But (and sadly, there is a “but”), the fly situation is out of control! Yes, the pesky black bugs that land on god-forsaken things and then proceed to swarm around your food. We went there for lunch and didn’t really notice the overpopulation of flies until our meals came out, of course. I might have counted about seven different flies at one time.

Needless to say, much of our lunch had been spent shooing away flies. Mid-conversation, we would stop to smack a fly or two that were headed for our plates. I asked the waitress if they always had an issue with flies, to which she admitted they did. She mentioned it might be because the restaurant sits next to a harbor.

Hopefully, they figure out a way to control the fly population; perhaps enclose the restaurant and install some AC (right now, it is open-aired). Otherwise, plant some insect-offensive foliage, like citronella. As much as I like to support local businesses, I am not sure I will be returning to Haleiwa Joe’s anytime soon.
