If you’re going to be on Oahu on Saturday, June 3, there is a must-do event happening that you won’t want to miss, especially if you’re traveling to Hawaii with children.
Ocean Fest
Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s north shore will host the 6th Annual North Shore Ocean Fest. All about the ocean, this free community event is geared towards the entire family. The goal of Ocean Fest is to educate all ages about ocean education and conservation through fun, family-friendly activities.
Hawaiian traditions place great kuleana (responsibility) to care for the Hawaiian islands and its resources through strong conservation. Honoring the past and looking for ways to conserve the ocean in the future is a responsibility that we take very seriously in Hawaii.
With that in mind, Ocean Fest brings together top ocean educators, activities, film, marine crafts, food vendors, live music, hula and lots of great prizes to promote education and conservation.
The event also honors World Oceans Day, which is celebrated to promote ocean education every year on June 8.
Activities at Ocean Fest
Non-profit and educational booths will have fun and educational activities. There will be drawing, coloring, spinning, reading, playing, and learning about the ocean, marine life, sustainability, and more.
There will also be an Ocean Art Gallery with free art workshops with artist Patrick Ching. He will have some of his art available to purchase as well. The Ocean Art Galery is an excellent opportunity to bring home a piece of local art and meet the artist who created it. Souvenirs don’t get much better than that.
Ocean Fest is also celebrating Hokule’a’s World-Wide Voyage, which concludes its epic three-year sail around the globe and returns home to Hawaii in June. Visitors will have the opportunity to see a Polynesian Voyaging Canoe and “talk story” with some crew members.
The Kōkua Hawaii Foundation, which supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii, will also host a Plastic Free Hawaii Water Station. Here, you can stop by and refill your water bottle for free. If you don’t have a water bottle, you can purchase an Ocean Fest Souvenir water bottle. What better time to go plastic-free than at Ocean Fest?
This is a great event to check out if you are visiting Hawaii because not only does it give you the opportunity to learn about ocean life, but it is also a chance to meet some local members of the community who are dedicated to conservation. With local food, local artists, and local entertainment, it doesn’t get much more local than this.

There will also be some EdVenture activities available. If you are interested, be sure to go to the EdVenture tent to sign up. There are limited seats available.
10:30am-Noon: Hikes to Kawela Bay by Ian Masterson and to Kahuku Point
1:30-2:15 pm: Water activities: Ocean Safety Clinic with Ian Masterson, WCC
or snorkel 101 with Hans Hedderman Surf School
2:30-3: 15 pm: Water activities: Ocean safety with Ian Masterson or Stand up Paddleboard and Canoe with Hans Hedderman Surf School
North Shore Ocean Education Coalition
The North Shore Ocean Education Coalition’s mission is to increase awareness and knowledge about the ocean, marine life, and ecosystems in order to protect, restore, and manage the use of ocean resources and inspire local and global conservation.
Supporting K-12 Ocean Education from Kahalu’u to Wailua, its members include Malama Pupukea Waimea, NOAA, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whales National Marine Sanctuaries, Monk Seal Foundation, Dolphin Quest, Hui O Hauula, and Turtle Bay Resort.
An annual fundraiser to benefit the North Shore Ocean Education Coalition will also be held on the West Lawn at Turtle Bay Resort.

Ocean Fest is truly a unique opportunity for you and your family to learn about ocean conservation. You can also meet local artists and even try out some hiking or water activities.
