What better way to explore Oahu’s North Shore than on horseback!

While there are several businesses that offer this thrilling island experience to locals and visitors, Turtle Bay has always been my favorite place to ride. The 12-mile trail takes riders along the ocean and through patches of ironwood trees, where patterns of shade and sunlight lace the ground ahead and the gentle kiss of a tradewind breeze sparks an adventurous heart.

As an added bonus, the trail passes by a rather famous banyan tree. Several television shows and films, like “Lost” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” chose the huge banyan as a spot for filming. Definitely not the only tree to admire, though, as the trail goes through a variety of tropical trees and other forest wonders.

Group rides start at the horse stables that are located on the shoreline adjacent to the resort. You can see it best from the pool bar – right beneath the row of ironwood trees. There are several tours from which to choose, including a sunset ride ($105/person), evening ride ($90/person) and group trail rides at various times throughout the day ($70/person). Turtle Bay offers private/advanced rides as well ($125/person).

A bit on the expensive side, for sure, especially since the trail ride is only 45 minutes. But if you’re willing to splurge a little during your vacation, then I would say it is well worth the extra mullah.
