It has just been announced that Bayfest at Marine Corp Base Hawaii will return in 2014, after being cancelled due to sequestration in 2013. Bayfest began in 1992 as a community event to show appreciation for Hawaii’s military members and their families. In addition to top national and international musical acts, the family-friendly festival has featured, military equipment and vehicle displays, carnival rides, a focus on ocean activities, an assortment of food vendors, and a fireworks display.
Bayfest has traditionally been held over the Fourth of July weekend, however in 2014 Bayfest will be held October 17-19. Although it is held on a restricted military base, Bayfest has always been open to the public.
Since its beginning, and before sequestration, Bayfest attracted crowds of tens of thousands over three days of the weekend event. Crowds have always been a good mix of visitors, residents, and active duty military personnel and their families.
Organized by Marine Corps Community Services, Bayfest has always featured a wide variety of musical acts, including Country & Western, classic rock, alternative, and hip hop. Famous acts that have taken the Bayfest stage in the past include country music legend Alan Jackson, Lynyrd Skynrd, Black Eyed Peas, the Mamas & the Papas, Hoobastank, and Three Doors Down. It’s good to know that so many luminaries from throughout the music industry have shown support for our troops.
The music lineup for Bayfest 2014 has not yet been announced, although organizers say one major act has already signed on. It’s safe to assume that the talent will be stellar. The official Bayfest website says that more details are coming soon.
So, if you plan on being in Hawaii in mid-October, if you love the atmosphere of a family-friendly music festival with international stars, and you’d like to show your support for America’s military personnel, Bayfest won’t disappoint.
