The Academy Awards of Surfing

Believe it or not, there’s an award for Worst Wipeout in the world of surfing.

SURFER Magazine hosts an award show every year at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Surfer The Bar. Professional surfers that starred in 2012 films or shorts have a chance of getting nominated to SURFER Poll, as the awards show is called. Judges then vote for their favorites, while readers choose Breakthrough Performer, Agent of Change and Top 10 Men and Top 5 Women Surfers.

Because the event at Turtle Bay is by invite only, most eager fans resort to watching it live on the web. My fiance happens to be a SURFER Poll freak! He votes as soon as the list of nominees comes out and makes sure we are home, on a computer by 7 p.m. on the night of the event.

Whether they’re watching at home on their laptops or sitting in the audience at Turtle Bay, it’s always neat to see the surfing community come together. Usually, it’s the pros and their families that get invited to the hotel. The winners go up on stage and make a short thank-you speech; kind of like an academy awards of surfing! Plus, celeb surfers get red carpet treatment before the event.

For a list of nominees for Best Barrel, Worst Wipeout, Heavy Water, Best Documentary, Best Short, Best Performance and Movie of the Year — visit the SURFER Poll website at www.SURFERpoll.com.
