Here’s yet another remarkable example of the aloha spirit shared abroad, and this time, it is meant to aid victims of super Typhoon Haiyan. After hitting the Philippines, people from around the world stepped in to lend a helping hand.
In Hawaii, various efforts sprouted up from the local community – from collecting canned goods at Hawaii high schools to sending Red Cross volunteers to the country. Several local businesses, like L & L Hawaiian Barbecue, have been donating proceeds to the relief cause. L & L donated 100-percent of its profits earned on Nov. 16, between 10 a.m. to noon, while Kaiser Permanente matched those earnings.
The same clothing company that designed “Aloha for Japan” t-shirts after the deadly earthquake several years ago has also created shirts to support the Philippines. The word “ALOHA” is printed across the front of the shirt, with the letter “O” replaced with the sun from the Filipino flag. All proceeds will be donated to the Filipino Chamber of Commerce. These are just a few of many growing number of organizations and inpiduals who have been giving and sharing in the aloha spirit, so we mahalo you for that.
But probably the biggest effort to give back so far would have to be a benefit concert for victims of the super typhoon. “Kokua For the Philippines” has been scheduled for Dec. 15, 2013 and will be broadcasted on the web, radio and local television stations. There’ll be live music and entertainment throughout the program, as well as a chance to donate to the American Red Cross for disaster relief.
