Congrats to Hawaii surfer Bethany Hamilton for tying the knot in August! Ten years ago, the Kauai native lost her arm in a shark attack but has since bounced back from that horrific time and travels the world as a motivational speaker and soul surfer.
She has truly been an inspiration to many, regardless of whether they surf or not. For me, her story has definitely motivated me to get back in the water after a short hiatus. I saw her surfing a few years ago at a popular surf break on Kauai and remember that look of determination on her face. It was obvious that Bethany would not let anything stand in her way.
She and her husband Adam Dirks bounce back and forth between Kauai and Adam’s hometown in Kansas. She has also been working on a book for teenage girls, promoting fitness, a healthy lifestyle and a relationship with God. No doubt, a role model for many.
Her remarkable story of survival and hope has been shared across the globe – either by herself or her movie “Soul Surfer.” The movie premiered in 2011and followed her life before and after but mostly, focusing on how she courageously overcame all odds and got back on that board.
There’s so much to say about this phenomenal young lady. Be sure to follow how the rest of her life’s story unfolds. Follow her on Twitter @bethanyhamilton.
