Shoppers will be delighted with a new-and-improved Ala Moana Shopping Center. From a Center Court redevelopment to an expansion of the Ewa Wing, Hawaii’s largest outdoor mall has been going through some major makeovers right before the holiday shopping season.
I had a chance to walk through the completed first phase of the Center Court one day and really liked what I saw. The restroom facilities and common areas looked dramatically different from what it used to be (dirty, dingy and dark). Never realized how much of a difference lighting could make, especially for an area located on the ground floor, where not much natural light comes through.
There are also tons of new shops, including Auana Quilts, Island Sole and Minamoto Kitchoan. The Japanese sweet treats on display in the window of Minamoto looked tempting. I am definitely going to stop by next time I am there, or at least my mochi cravings will force me to.
As for the Ewa Wing, a multi-level 650,000-square-foot expansion is in the works. It will be the home of Bloomingdale’s department store, large format retailers, dining, entertainment and more, according to Ala Moana’s website. Shoppers will be delighted with the addition of 1,000 parking spots as well. This phase of renovations should be done by 2015.
Lastly, Ala Moana expects construction on a boutique 23-story condo to be done by late 2014. This will include one, two, three bedroom condominium homes. Needless to say, the mall will get even bigger than it already is. Can’t wait to watch as it all unfolds year by year.
