When we looked up “coffee shops on Kauai,” the results were not to our liking. Most were located in Kapaa, which is a ways away from where we were staying in Omao; a bit of a problem for us caffeine-deprived people in search of somewhere to work. (Yes, I work on vacation). Most of the places on the south side are grab-and-go style and not the kind you can sit down and chill.
That’s why it was a pleasant surprise when we came across Little Fish Coffee in Hanapēpē. About a 15-minute drive away, this coffee shop had been exactly what we were looking for all along. A quaint set up of chairs and bar stools and the constant aroma of roasted coffee beans filled the tiny shop. Its personality really shows as soon as you walk in; a magnetic word game takes up one wall, while a random collection of books can be found at the other. Images of popular culture and trinkets are also sprinkled throughout.
Outside, a little garden oasis could be found, complete with a peaceful waterfall fountain. But it was much too hot to sit outside, so we stayed inside instead. I made the mistake of getting a hot coffee when I meant to get an iced one, but that was fine. The second time there, I got it right, and it was perfect for yet another muggy day on the island.
Little Fish appeals to more than just the coffee-drinking crowd, too, because it also serves juices, teas and smoothies. Basically, anything to quench your thirst. However, the pour-over coffee technique seems to be their thing, which explains why most come here for coffee.
Turns out, Little Fish offered free wi-fi, too! So we were set to get working at this charming little coffee oasis.
