The ocean is a wonderful place to reflect on life, even if just for a moment or two. It doesn’t have to be deep reflection but rather, it’s a time to sort through thoughts that might be floating around or memories that might have drifted away.
My reflection comes whenever I am surfing at sunset. Feeling the soft warmth of the sun on my skin reminds me of how lucky we are to live; not just “live Hawaii,” as the popular saying goes, but LIVE LIFE! And it’s such a beautiful life we live. Even if I didn’t have the best day, there’s something about that golden light touching the water that instantly calms me.
One thing I love to do when surfing is look back toward land. As we learn in life, having an opened-mind and heart will broaden our perspectives. In this case, it is both literal and figurative. Surfing off of Waikiki yields a view of skyscrapers and cars, while surfing on a neighbor island will most likely be a view of an unscathed mountain. A great comparison of a hectic Honolulu life and a mellow mood that usually blankets other islands.
You don’t have to be in the water physically to reap the ocean’s benefits. Because water is known for its calming traits, just being near the ocean will put you at ease. Ocean therapy, as most call it, is good for your soul! While on vacation, I recommend getting as much ocean therapy as possible. And that’s an order!
