It’s not uncommon for small family businesses in Hawaii to expand beyond our island shores. Popular plate lunch venue L & L Hawaiian Barbecue, as well as Kuaaina Burger have both gone global.
Moke’s Bread & Breakfast will follow a similar path, heading overseas to Tokyo, Japan. Store owners have been working with Sanrio Company and expect the location to open in September, according to a KHON2 News report.
Moke’s has always been one of Kailua’s best-kept secrets, so it is a little sad to see it go mainstream, so to speak. I remember coming here almost every other weekend as a kid because my family loved the lilikoi pancakes so much. After all, that’s what they’re most famous for.
In addition to expanding overseas, Moke’s Kailua will be having a mini expansion of its own. Customers who have been there know that it is pretty small and gets packed quickly because of the limited seating. They will be adding about 60 more seats, according to the report, which should surely cut down the wait time.
But no matter where in the world this small family business calls home, it will always have a piece of Hawaii embedded in its very name. (The Mokulua Islands, or Moke’s for short, is a famous Kailua landmark.) And be able to share the spirit of Aloha by way of people’s taste buds.
