The three R’s of the environment (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) have been engrained in us since we were kids; a Hawaii nonprofit, however, brings to the table a fourth that’s meant to get everyone stoked on malama aina, or taking care of our land.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Rock!

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii will be rocking out in the Kakaako area for its first-ever Rockaako coastal cleanup and rock concert. The group of surfers and ocean lovers have been giving back to the community since 2011; this time, it’s about reaching out to new audiences through a day of music, fun and kokua.

“We host events like this because it brings out people that may not necessarily ever participate in a beach cleanup,” says Executive Director Kahi Pacarro. “We are creating an ohana that cares and becomes part of the awakening and paradigm shift away from overconsumption and towards a more sustainable path.”

The public is encouraged to attend this free event, which features a coastal cleanup between Ala Moana Boulevard and Kakaako Waterfront, as well as a free live concert, food, vendors and activities. Local singer-songwriter Tavana and keiki band (11 to 13 year olds) Chaotic Five will set the mood and get people pumped on a cleaner Hawaii.

“Our hope is to inspire coastal stewardship,” Kahi explains. “We want to show the Kakaako residents and businesses that Kakaako is a community not split by Ala Moana Boulevard but rather, a whole where mauka cares for makai and vice versa.”

For visitors seeking more voluntourism opportunities, consider checking out Rockaako. It’s a great way to not only give back to a place that has – in a sense – granted you a dream vacation but immerse yourself in the island community and its culture as well. Mahalo!
