All that glitters isn’t gold. It’s green, if you’re frolicking through the Emerald City of Oz, anyway.

And since the recent debut of the hugely popular broadway show, Wicked, Hawaii’s been looking glamorously greener. Not to mention, put under quite the spell with this re-imagining of the Wizard of Oz. Wicked is the untold story of the witches that begins long before Dorothy drops in. These two unlikely friends meet and grow up to become quite the opposite. You’ve got the “hideodeously” green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West and G(uh)linda the Good Witch of the North…in bright pink.

By bubble or broom, these witches fly into some trouble along the way.

Every couple of years, Hawaii gets treated with big-time broadways or musical acts that willingly make the long trek over the Pacific. Wicked – based on the 1995 best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire – is one such spellbinding show and follows in the footsteps of other island-bound broadways, like Miss Saigon and Les Mis(erables).

The cast of Wicked has its own island flavor, in the form of the male lead. Kalaheo High School grad Cliffton Hall plays the snobby prince Fiyero in Wicked and has also played the lead role of Chris in Saigon and Marius in Les Mis. And although Cliffton now lives in California with his wife and kids, he gets a chance to visit relatives and friends back home – all of whom were obviously in the audience at last weekend’s show. The applause roared even louder toward the end, when Cliffton held out the double shakas. Like they say, you can’t take the island out of the boy!

Hawaii-born Cliffton Hall returns to the islands for another broadway.

Wicked is a must-see if you’re in the islands from now through the holidays. Whether you’re a Hall fan, theater fan or a fan of dynamite entertainment, you’re sure to be enchanted by the elaborate sets, costumes and cast. The show is a treat of charming humor and bewitching performances that pull on your heartstrings with magical melodies. Wicked is one show you can’t miss, so be sure to see it before the magic is gone from the islands.
