With summer practically nipping at our heels, expect to soon find some fun surf on Hawaii’s southern shores. This, of course, includes the Oahu tourist hub of Waikiki, which has become one of the most popular places to learn the art of wave sliding because of its playful waves and its role in surfing’s history. Legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku and his buddies dabbled in these very same waves decades ago, marking the beginning of an era.
You’ll most likely learn to surf on a longboard like this because it’s more buoyant than a shortboard.
Many tourists would agree that learning to surf on the south shore is much easier than learning elsewhere (north, east or west shores). That’s because the wave tends to be mellower and allows first-timers to ease into the ride rather than get thrown into it at full force. This is not to say that the southern shores never get big, gnarly surf like the north shore during the winter. It does. Last summer, avid surfers got excited about several high-surf advisory swells, peaking at 15 to 18 foot faces.
It’s always a good idea to take a lesson if you’re interested in learning because they not only provide you with a surfboard but also with wave knowledge. Instructors can tell you if it’s safe to paddle out and where the best take-off spot would be for beginners.
Below you’ll find a helpful guide for your summer surf explorations in the islands. Before you know it, you’ll be up and riding Hawaiian waves!
