Gourmet cupcakes have taken America by storm, and Cake Couture in downtown Honolulu gives Oahu residents and people on Hawaii Vacations the chance to join in on the deliciousness.

Located on Queen Street in the Davies Pacific Center in downtown Honolulu, Cake Couture offers a mouthwatering selection of decadent cupcakes that rival those seen on “Cupcake Wars” and other popular TV shows. Just a few blocks away from ‘Iolani Palace, the Hawaii State Art Museum, Mission Houses Museum, and the Hawaii State Capitol, visitors checking out downtown historic sites can easily swing by the little bakery for sweet treat.

Voted Best Cupcakes in 2008 by Honolulu Magazine, Cake Couture is on a roll, building a positive and mouthwatering reputation with a perse selection of cupcakes that range from traditional cake flavors to unique re-creations of mealtime favorites. All cupcakes are made from scratch and baked fresh each morning before arriving at the downtown store. They come in a wide variety of flavors, and follow a rotating menu, with certain cupcakes available on certain days. Traditional favorites such as Red Velvet and Vanilla (with real Madagascar vanilla) appear on the menu every day, while other, more unique flavors such as Orange Creamsicle, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Cinnamon Toast appear on the menu one to two times per week. Local Hawaiian flavors such as Pineapple and Chocolate Haupia (a coconut custard and popular Hawaiian desert) are also integrated into the rotating schedule.

During my latest lunchtime visit to the downtown bakery, I surveyed the landscape for a few minutes before settling on a pineapple cupcake with pineapple-cream-cheese frosting. I was torn between the Key Lime-Coconut and the Pineapple, but after learning of the hidden layer of fruit filling in the pineapple cupcake, the decision was a no-brainer.

My primary gripe with most gourmet bakeries specializing in cupcakes is that they focus too intently on the frosting and neglect the flavor of the cake itself. This cupcake, however, offered the perfect balance of flavor between the two textures. The first bite was enough to leave my sweet tooth satisfied for an entire week, but the taste was far too good to leave any crumbs behind. I tasted the essence of real pineapple and not an ounce of artificiality.

While cupcakes are the main attraction at the downtown store, Cake Couture sells an assortment of souvenir accessories and apparel bearing the phrase “Bake em, Danno,” a play on the signature line from the popular TV show Hawaii Five-O.

Downtown Honolulu is approximately four miles from Waikiki and is easily accessible via public bus (routes E,2, 19 and 20), cab, and the Waikiki Trolley Red Line. Street parking and public parking lots/garages are also available in the downtown area.

A gourmet cupcake joint right downtown…pretty sweet if you ask me!

  1. Thank you Erika!  I absolutely love the foodie posts!  Those cupcakes look amazing and I definitely want to try the pineapple one.

  2. OMG…this looks so tasty! Red velvet cupcakes are my favorite…just had one yesterday from Lililha Bakery. I will definitely try the cupcakes at Cake Couture next time I'm in downtown Honolulu.
