Word is that another television show will begin shooting in Hawaii soon. Home and Away is casting for local extras and will be filming in early March. That word is from the Hawaii Actors Network. Details are scarce but just the hint of a new production was enough to attract almost 50 people to the online discussion group in under an hour. There is an Australian TV series called Home and Away that is also aired in the United Kingdom, parts of Europe and New Zealand. Its 24th season premier was last week. It is not aired in the United States, so mainland viewers will have to remain content with Hawaii Five-0 and Off the Map for now.
It won’t be long until Hawaii is back on the big screen — Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens May 20. That shoot brought Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and the rest of the crew to Oahu and Kauai last summer. Many locals had a hand in the filming, both in front of and behind the cameras.
Even those of us who are not directly involved in movies and television enjoy “location spotting” — identifying where scenes were filmed when we see them on the screen. Extended scenes like in the Pirates move are fairly easy. The quick editing of Hawaii Five-0 makes it more of a challenge, unless it’s one of the scenes I’ve seen while it was being shot in Honolulu.
It will be interesting to see what an Australian television series wants to show of Hawaii.
