Kauai’s south side produces excellent Mediterranean fare
Casablanca at Kiahuna Plantation is on Kauai’s sunny south shore in Poipu. Walking up the serpentine sidewalk we thought “what a perfect place to enjoy a beautiful Kauai evening.” The warm and inviting atmosphere immediately embraced Dan and I while romance bloomed in the open air dining room.
As we settled into our comfortable chairs, Mike Young’s soft guitar music mingled with the aromas from the kitchen and nearby laughter. Mike Young is a Kauai musician who not only plays at Casablanca, he also performs his original music for Kauai Hawaii weddings. His CD “In the Islands” is a fun combination of jazzy, Hawaiian surf music. I love that he is giving back; through his non profit Wave Riders Against Drugs, he nurtures a “drug free healthy lifestyle” through education and water sports.
Casablanca has an extensive wine selection and I recommend allowing the staff to pair their wines to each course. Working with small vineyards, Casablanca offers customers wine at very reasonable prices. Glasses average $7 and bottles start at $19. Mollydooker Winery in Australia, receiving two Top 10 Best Wine in the World ratings by Wine Spectator, will be featured in a wine tasting on October 9th.
My favorite appetizer of all time, as in the best I’ve ever had, is the Mozzarella Fresca for $11. Fresh house made mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto, baked and then drizzled with a fig, port and cinnamon sauce. The sweet and salty outside combined with the warm and creamy inside was something very special.
My mother is from Barcelona, Spain and she loves lamb chops, I remember many trips to Spain where lamb chops were the center of family meals and celebrations. I was happy to learn that the lamb chops at Casablanca are the best I have ever had and they have raised the bar in terms of lamb chop glee! I know, two best I’ve ever hads but, it’s true.
My folks will be here next Sunday and I am looking forward to bringing mom here!.
