Should you be worried about Bed Bugs in Hawaii?

Hawaii Vacations Connection E 464

Hawaii Five-0 Sunset on the Beach
Did you know that you can see the premiere of next seasons Hawaii Five-0 before anyone else in the world does? Yes it’s true, the premiere episode airs in Hawaii at an event called Sunset on the Beach a week before the actual episode airs nationally. We are excited to hear that just today Peter Lenkov, the executive producer of Hawaii Five-0 tweeted the date is set for September 10th. While this has not been confirmed, and he has subsequently deleted this tweet,  we believe that it only makes sense that this will end up being around this date. For more information check out our Facebook page which has detailed information about the event and our special packages for those people who’d like to attend. Bed bugs in Hawaii?
Bed bugs have been making big news lately. Today we got a question from Jason who wants to know if he should be worrying about that if he is coming here on his Hawaii vacation. In the 13 years I’ve been doing travel to Hawaii I have had not one single call from a customer complaining about bed bugs in a Hawaii Hotel. The fact is that there are bedbugs everywhere and you can even get them from other people’s clothing or shoes. I think the whole issue regarding bedbugs is being blown way out of proportion and that would not let any news like this hamper your Hawaii travel plans.

Favorite restaurants on Kauai
I was asked today by a Facebook friend Nikki to share my favorite restaurants on Kauai. There are so many excellent choices on Kauai but here are some that I think are worth checking out if you’re on the Garden Isle.

How does a tourist live like a local?

Experiencing Hawaii Local Style
Today we get a question from Jessica who is traveling to Oahu for the third time and wants to see the island like a local during her Hawaii Vacation. She’s staying in Makaha on the leeward side of the island of Oahu. On this part of the island she’ll have no problem experiencing things as a local because very few tourists ever venture to that side of Oahu. Also known as the Waianae coast, you’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. I offer her some tips about the best  beaches and  recommend some of the local restaurants that we enjoy.

Tips for visiting Hawaii’s Volcano
Have you ever wondered what’s the best way to see the volcano on the Big Island? We answer this question and offer some advice on how best to experience this amazing natural wonder. In order to really experience  Hawaii Volcano National Forrest, I highly recommend that you stay on the Hilo side at least one night so that you can avoid a long drive from the Kona side which is where most of the hotels exist. Renting a car and driving there on your own is probably the most efficient way to to go. Once you arrive at the visitor center the Rangers will give you all the instructions you need on how to view the lava and where it’s located because it’s constantly changing.

Common questions answered

We also cover a couple of very common questions on today’s show which include; When is the best time of year to visit Hawaii? and What is the best way to get around without it costing too much? For the most part you really need to rent a car on all islands except Oahu where there is very affordable public transportation.

WIN WIN WIN
If you have a question please e-mail it to me at Bruce@hawaii-aloha.com and if I answer it on the show to be treated to a bag of Hershey Macadamia not kisses which can only be found in Hawaii.

Saving money on meals in Hawaii

Hawaii Vacations Connection E462

What does it cost for meals in Hawaii?
If you’ve been hearing that food in Hawaii is more than the mainland you’re hearing correctly. In general, food is about 20% more then on the mainland. The reason for this is because mostly all the food we have is imported. Even with the high prices here you can still save money on meals during Hawaii Vacations by using some of the tips we offer in today’s podcast.

Seashell collection in Hawaii
Mark one of our Facebook friends had a question about seashells and where he can find them in Hawaii. You might be surprised to learn that you really don’t see too many seashells while walking along the beach. Most of the seashells you can collect are found when snorkeling or near reefs and ledges along the beaches in Hawaii. Many people also think it’s illegal to remove keepsakes from our beaches however,  it is perfectly fine as long as it’s not used for commercial purposes.

Hawaii Dinner Cruises
One my favorite things to do is to be on the water so being at sea in and of itself  is always a treat for me. The food you’ll fine is rather typical, nothing fancy, a nice buffet  but certainly not a deal breaker. The entertainment on a Hawaii Dinner Cruise  is what you would expect, kinda touristy but again I don’t think a deal breaker. Today we ought to give you our thoughts on dinner cruises which might help you decide what is right when you come here on vacation.

The Hawaii "High"
Many people come to Hawaii and never want to leave. And then once they go home they can’t stop thinking of this magical place called Hawaii. Today we get a question from Jason who wants to know how he can come down off this "high" which he has been on since he left in March. My advice is to go with it and enjoy your memories of Hawaii and come back as soon as possible!!

Hawaii Vacation Tips – Listener Questions

Hawaii Vacation Connection E 461

Today we offer up some Hawaii vacation tips which are answers from our podcast and Facebook listeners.

Serena wanted to know if she needed to rent a car in Hawaii. This is a very common question that we receive. With the exception of the Oahu it’s recommended that you rent a car on all the islands. The reason for this is that there is no public transportation and taxis and shuttles are extremely expensive. So having a car is really the only way to get around. Enjoying the outdoors and exploring the islands is what makes coming to Hawaii so special so you really don’t want to limit your activities to just a hotel.

Madeline wanted to know which of the Hawaiian Islands was the most visited. The island of Oahu is the most visited of all the Hawaiian Islands. It’s the most populated with nearly 1,000,000 people. If your idea is a relaxing vacation without any people around you probably won’t rule out Waikiki. It should be noted that there are some places outside of Waikiki, for example up on the North Shore, which are not as populated.

David, a new podcast listener, wanted to know if it makes sense to do a two-week itinerary which includes a seven day Hawaii Cruise and then combining it with a land package on a Oahu for three days and then over to Maui for four days. He and his wife discovered that when they recently took a cruise across the Pacific on the Rhapsody of the seas, they didn’t get to spend enough time here in the islands. I actually hear this comment a lot and that’s what I recommend folks go on the seven-day round-trip sale which leaves from Honolulu every Saturday. We discussed this question and give him some advice.

If you have a question you’d like us to discuss on the show feel free to email me at Bruce@Hawaii-aloha.com

Get out of your comfort zone on your Hawaii Vacation

Paddling is Fun!

I recently have taken up paddle boarding which is a great fun thing to do and should be part of a  Hawaii vacation package. When you come to Hawaii there many activities you can engage in that take you a little out of your comfort zone but are both fun and safe.  Paddle boarding is one of those activities and you don’t  have to stand up to do it!  I recommend doing it the old-fashioned way, on your belly;  it’s much easier than stand-up and I think more enjoyable. You can also do adventurous things like zip lining , scuba dive or snorkeling without having a lot of experience.

Hawaii Five-0 gets complicated
This week’s final episode of the first season of Hawaii Five-0 was packed with surprises. It was the buzz all week as people analyzed what’s to come for next season. Today we talk about our plans for this year’s premiere episode where will be hosting people from all over the world for a series of activities on the week of the premier. It’s called Sunset on the Beach or SOTB for short, and it looks like it will be the first or second week of September. If you’d like more information about attending join our SOTB facebook page
where we publish all of the information about this fun of it.

Keeping your stuff dry
Have you ever wondered what to do with your car keys if you’re going to the beach in Hawaii? A Facebook question came in asking for some advice about what to do in this situation. I share with a waterproof pouch that I recently purchased that works great for that kind of situation keeps everything bone dry.

Will a sofa bed work if you get a condo on your Hawaii vacation?

Hawaii Vacation Connection E459

Cheap airfare to Hawaii
Today we touch on the subject of getting cheap airfares to Hawaii. Many times customers will call us saying they see special airfares advertised on the net and wonder if we can get the same rates. The answer to that question is yes and no. The truth of the matter is we have just as much chance of getting it as anyone else does because the airlines only have a limited amount of these cheap seats available. In some cases they only have a few seats when they make the announcement that these cheap fares are available. This is very frustrating for consumers and for us travel agents as well. Our best advice when seeing airfares like that is to book it immediately, don’t wait. Unfortunately many of us just don’t have that luxury because we usually have to check with somebody else and be sure of the dates.

Sofa bed vs. Regular Bed
Is a  regular bed always more comfortable than a sofa bed? This is a question we answer today as a result of the customer who didn’t really understand that when you choose a one bedroom condo that means that there is usually one twin/queen bed in the bedroom and a pullout sofa in the living room. This customer made important point about the difference between a sofa bed in a real bed. We talk about making sure that you understand what the betting is available when getting a condo for your Hawaii vacation.

Keeping busy on a long flight to Hawaii

For many people travel to why it’s the longest I’ve ever been in an airplane. Today we offer some tips about how to keep busy while you’re flying to Hawaii. We got lots of suggestions from her Facebook friends can share those on today’s podcast. The most common suggestion; having a stiff drink.
