Travel Insurance

I wanted to write a quick blog about Travel Insurance again. As in my previous blogs regarding Travel Insurance, I said that "travel insurance is optional, but highly recommended". This is true for travel agents who travel too.
I went on a trip this past June. I did not do a pre arranged package but a ala carte package where I booked the Air, Hotel, and Car separately. One air ticket was used with miles and the other purchased. The total of my trip was 1600.00 for a 2 week stay. There were just 2 of us traveling and neither one of us were sick or have pre existing medical conditions. That is the main reason people say they don’t want to get the insurance. But being sick is not all that travel insurance covers.  Well I followed my own advice and purchased the standard travel insurance. For $1600.00 it only cost me 36.00 to be covered for various reasons, mainly if you cancel do to illness.
I did not need to cancel due to a pre trip illnesses. But I did experience damage luggage. Other than reimbursement for canceling due to illness most travel insurance covers many other travel mishaps. And it was a good thing it covered damaged luggage.
As a travel agent I travel with my notebook computer and a portable printer for various business reasons and for the convenience of printing my boarding pass for my return trip. I carry the notebook and printer in my carry-on luggage to avoid it being damage or lost. Well on one of my flight segments the plane was too small for the carry-on’s and the airline stowed the carry-on in the belly of the plane. Well, after I got to the hotel, I had to print something and my printer would not work. Once I got home I took it the the repair shop and they told me the printer head was bent/damaged. So I filled a claim with the insurance company and I got a check in 4 weeks and was able to get a new portable travel printer. The insurance covered the cost to have a repair person look at it plus the cost of the original printer. So the only thing I was out was the insurance premium of 36.00. If I did not get the insurance, I would have had to dish out 250.00 for a new portable printer.
So, the lesson here is although "travel insurance is optional, it is highly recommended".

SNL Skit of Hawaii went too far!!!!

Some of you may have seen the skit on SNL with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and thought of it as funny. But I think the message it sent was not funny for anyone in Hawaii who lives here (as I do….born and raised),…anyone who works here, (whether in the tourism industry or not,)….for anyone who visits us for the 1st time or the 20th time. It was not funny at all.  SNL’s skit of Hawaii went too far. The bad thing about it is that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson grew up in Hawaii, went to school in Hawaii and has family still living and make a living in Hawaii. For him to trash Hawaii and the effect it may have on our tourism is very sad. He knows it was not "pono" (right) on his part. He will need to one day make it "right"  (pono) with Hawaii.

If you are looking to visit Hawaii for the 1st time, please don’t let this skit give you the impression that’s how you will be treated when you come to the islands. Hawaii will embrace you and treat you with ALOHA.

"Akahai," meaning kindness,
to be expressed with tenderness;

"Lokahi," meaning unity,
to be expressed with harmony;

"Oluolu," meaning agreeable,
to be expressed with pleasantness;

"Haahaa," meaning humility,
to be expressed with modesty;

"Ahonui," meaning patience,
to be expressed with perseverance

The Footsteps of President Obama

Today history was made as our own Hawaii Born Barack Obama was named the 44th President.

I have lived in Hawaii all my life (born and raised) and I am so excited for our state. 2008 was a year of many memorial events for us. Because of my excitement as I write this blog, forgive me if I miss anything.

After a 12 and 0 football season the University of Hawaii represented the state of Hawaii in the 2008 "All State Sugar Bowl". The Waipio Little League Baseball team also represented Hawaii and won the 2008 "Little League Baseball World Series". Our own Brian Clay won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in the decathlon. Our State Quarter made is debut. And of course "Barack Obama" becoming the 44th President of the United States.

I invite you (E komo mai) to come to Hawaii and explore our beautiful Island. When you do come, don’t forget to take our newest activity tour: "The Footsteps of President Obama"
Sample the true beauty of Oahu and follow the footsteps of President Obama. This half-day excursion is designed to show you the Hawaii where President Obama was raised and also includes some of the most scenic attractions, like Diamond Head, Halona Blow Hole, and Pali Lookout in just a few hours.

Here are a few other places President Obama has visited on his trips back to Oahu:  Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, Pali Lookout,National Memorial Cemetery o the Pacific at Punchbowl. He always makes sure he gets a Shave Ice (Snow Cone) and there are many shops around the island for Shave Ice, one of the popular is Matsumoto’s in the old town of Haleiwa.

Give me a call when you are ready for that trip to Hawaii. I would be more than happy to assist you with your travel plans and to arrange any of the above activities.

Sometimes a Travel Agents job is more than just booking your Air

Here are some photo’s I wanted to share of a customer who booked a Hawaii vacation package with me. This customer needed more than just her Air, Hotel and Transportation done.

She knew she would not be able to get this service or request done with your basic online travel booking engine, who have agents in call centers everywhere but in Hawaii. She needed personal assitance and someone she could trust.

This customer needed a fresh Bouquet, Corsage and Boutonnieres to match her wedding colors of "Green and Brown" , as well as a small Wedding Cake and Cupcakes to serve her family that came with her to celebrate her Wedding in Hawaii.

Here is what I was able to do for her:

She needed a Travel Agent that would assist her with arranging her rehearsal dinner for 19 guest and the Luau for her Wedding Reception. She needed transportation for 19 of them to get to the rehearsal, ..get to the church for the ceremony,… take them to a off site area for wedding photo’s, …then take them to the Luau and back to her hotel without being cattled in a hot shuttle bus.  I was able to get her request done within her budget and I even got her a 20 passenger stretch Limo to take her and her family/friends on that special day.

This customer could have gone to a local agency in her state of residence, but she put her trust in a travel agent with experience and one that lived in Hawaii.

Well I believe she made the right decision in calling on a local Hawaii Travel Agent.

When you are planning a trip to Hawaii for your Wedding call or email me and I would be more than happy to assist you with your travel plans.

Waikiki Sunset on the Beach

I just recenlty returned from Rochester New York and had a wonderful visit with my Aunty Joan. I live in Hawaii, but have fallen in love with the City of Rochester. It may be that its where my father grew up and where my grandparents and Aunty Joan lived all their lives.So I guess I have that enternal bound to the city of Rochester.

While in Rochester Aunty Joan wanted to take me to "Wegmans Concert by the Shore", located at the Ontario Beach Park. But that got cancelled due to rain. We still made it down to the park where we took a lovely stroll thru the park and along the beautiful shoreline and pier. I could just imagine the fun we would have had if it did not rain out.

Ontario Beach Park Shoreline

This venue reminded me of what we offer in Hawaii that is similar. "Waikiki Sunset on the Beach’.

The Hawaii Venue is located in Waikiki along Queens Surf Beach. Held on Saturday and Sundays Nights. The movie is shown on a huge 30 foot screen. The movie is free. There is normally a free music show prior to the start of the movie, from different local muscians. A variety of Food Vendors set up and serve quality food from local cusines to mainland style pizza. They set up a few tables and chairs that you can sit at,..but its 1st come 1st serve, so the best thing to do is bring your own lawn chair and even your own food, cooler and stuff. If you are a visitor the ABC stores sell beach chairs and beach mats that are not too costly. Actually if you pick it up once you arrive you will have a chair/mat that you can use all week.

Here are some photos of our Waikiki Sunset on the Beach.

Setting up the huge 30 foot screen and the food vendors setting up their tents.

The crowd arrives early to get some swim/wave action

These guys are shaping the sand to be their back rest when they view the movie.

Everyone watching the pre enterainent show.

Get your popcorn ready the movie is about to start.

So when you are ready to book your trip to Hawaii, give me a call. I would be happy to assist you with your travel plans from the begining to the end. Don’t forget to ask me about the "Waikiki Sunset on the Beach" movie schedule so you can plan that into your itinerary.

Airlines Fees

Aloha Blog Readers,

Everyday I have to quote what airline fees apply to a customer’s booking and it so hard to remember every fee as each airline is different. One airline will charge a fee for the 1st bag checked in and another won’t charge at all. One airline will charge if you want a window seat and another airline won’t. So thank goodness for this chart. I hope it helps you in deciding which airline to fly with.

Call me to get a quote on a Hawaii Vacation Package. It would be my pleasure to assit you.

U.S. Domestic Airline Fee Chart

Airline Fees are a fact of life (hastened by $130/barrel oil), it is important that everyone include fee charges while shopping for airfare. To that end we have compiled a comparison list of U.S. domestic airline fees. Fees are changing rapidly and we’ll do our best to keep the chart up to date.(RickSeaney.com)
