Billionaire Buys Island Air

First he bought an island. Then, billionaire Larry Ellison bought an airline company. As confirmed by both Ellison and Island Air, the deal secures the future of the company, which had been undergoing a restructuring for several months now.

Lana'i Pineapple Island

Up until this announcement, Island Air left everyone hanging when it said the company made a deal with an "unnamed buyer." That's when the rumors of prospective buyers started, and everyone looked to Ellison, who had just bought Lāna‘i.

Fortunately, the change of ownership will not cost Island Air employees their jobs. The company offers 224 weekly flights between O‘ahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kaua‘i, Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i. This is comparably small-scale when considering the 160 daily flights Hawaiian Airlines offers to the major islands, as well as the mainland. Perhaps this change in ownership for Island Air will give it the boost it needed to compete with the state's largest carrier and give travelers cheaper airfare options.

Like other locals, I'm a bit wary about these recent purchases. Lāna‘i's a small island, with a small population that's remained somewhat "untouched" by development and tourism for decades. Granted, there are a few fancy resorts and restaurants. But overall, the island continues to thrive with a natural history and culture that we don't often see on the other islands.

Increased access to Lāna‘i via Island Air routes will no doubt be great for state tourism, but does that mean we sacrifice the only island that can still truly be called, "Old Hawai‘i?" It also begs the question of whether or not it will become the next Waikīkī. I sure hope not. Ellison says he plans to mostly leave Lāna‘i as is but does hope to turn it into a model of sustainable energy. That'd be awesome. But with Hawai‘i's rough past (and present) involving development, you can't blame me for saying: I'll believe it when I see it.

Mission Impossible on Lanai

There's was talk of actor Tom Cruise buying land on the sleepy island of Lāna‘i, where he'd build a huge mansion on a multimillion-dollar estate. Luckily, it's just a rumor. For him to purchase land on the Pineapple Isle would truly be a "mission impossible."

Pineapple Island

Why? Because billionaire Larry Ellison already bought almost all the land! The rumors started with a National Enquirer article that quoted unnamed "insiders" about the actor's plans to knock down homes and build a mansion for him and his daughter. The sources estimated the grand total to be about $25 million. Gossipcop.com confirmed with Cruise's agent that it was, in deed, a rumor and that the Top Gun star has no intentions of buying land in Hawai‘i.

When you're not familiar with the situation or reading about it from thousands of miles away, it's difficult to decipher between what's fact and what's fiction. A friend asking me if this Cruise rumor was true prompted me to write about it for the blog. There's no way the people of Lāna‘i – or of the state, for that matter – would stand for such nonsense. Well, without a fight anyway. Plus,

What's not a rumor, however, is that Ellison has already been hard at work planning for an ultra-luxury eco-resort – modeled after the Kona Village resort. This would make it the third luxury hotel on the island. Manele Bay and the Lodge at Ko‘ele are the other two.

If you're wondering, the locals – so far – seem quite pleased with Ellison's eco-friendly plans. Lets hope he sticks to his word and does some good for the island and the state of Hawai‘i.
