Visitors who like to bare it all on beaches will wonder whether there are good Hawaii nude beaches. Today, we’re exposing the truth about nude beaches here so you can soak up as much sunshine as possible during your vacation.

Is Nudity Allowed on Hawaii’s Beaches?

Public nudity is illegal in Hawaii. And the law is heavily enforced in state parks and spots with many children.

But there are other areas where the law isn’t nearly as enforced – places where you might bare all (or some) to get a line-free tan.

A Note on Topless Sunbathing

Topless sunbathing is typically more accepted than full nudity, so if in doubt, that is a good place to start.

[Here’s where the former Maui mayor declared that it’s not illegal to sunbathe topless in Hawaii.]

Where to Find Hawaii Nude Beaches

There are no official Nude Beaches in Hawaii. But, there are places where a little nudity is more acceptable.

These locations are typically “off the beaten path” and have rough waters that aren’t great for surfing or families. Their seclusion offers a great chance to uncover and get a little sun on your bum.

Want to check out one for yourself? Here are some beaches in Hawaii where you might feel comfortable swimming or sunbathing sans clothes. (Or, use this list as a guide on where not to visit, if you’d rather avoid Hawaii nude beaches).

Hawaii Island Nude Beaches

Honokohau Harbor Beach – Located on the Kona Coast, off Highway 19. The north end is a popular Hawaii gay beach. According to some Hawaii nude beach forums, police have been cracking down on this area, and (like all places on this list), visitors should go at their own risk.

Kehena Beach – Located in the Puna district, off Highway 137. This black sand beach is also known for its frequent dolphin sightings, giving Kehena its nickname, “Dolphin Beach.”

Steam Vents – Located near Hilo, off of Highway 130. You may find people baring all to enjoy the steam baths in the caves bordering this beach.

Kauai

Donkey Beach – Located off of Highway 56, north of the 11-mile marker. The small hike leads you to a secluded beach that’s great for Hawaii nude sunbathing.

Secret Beach – Located at the end of a red, dirt road off of Kalihiwai Road. The only access is by a hiking trail.

Maui

Little Beach at Makena – Located a few miles past Wailea, along Makena Alanui Road. Park at Makena Beach (Big Beach) and walk a few minutes over a grassy hill to Little Beach. This is probably one of the most well-known Hawaii nude beaches.

Oahu Hawaii Nude Beaches

Polo Beach – Located on the North Shore in Mokuleia, off of Kamehameha Highway. From the public beach access, turn left and walk up the beach until you round a bend in the sand. I was looking for shells at this beach, when I accidentally came upon the “nude” side of it. I don’t think I ever felt more out of place in my life! Be careful, as there is also a Polo Beach on Maui that is not suitable for nudity.

Diamond Head Beach – Located at the foot of Diamond Head Crater. A group of nude sunbathers gather at the far corner to the right of the public beach access.

A Final Word About Hawaii Nude Beaches

Like we mentioned, public nudity is illegal in Hawaii, but the rules get blurry when it comes to topless sunbathing. If you decide to do any kind of undressing at Hawaii’s beaches, be mindful about the location, respect other beachgoers, and be sure to wear lots of sunscreen!
