Introducing Jamie Winpenny

July 7th, 2009

Many readers, I’m sure, are familiar with the writing of my father, Jim Winpenny. He left us in May, presumably to join my mother in the paradise they most certainly deserve. “Pa,” as I called him, left behind a legacy of love and aloha for which my sisters and I will be forever grateful. I’ve followed in his footsteps by pursuing a career in the creative arts, writing in particular. I’ve been asked by the founders of Aloha-Hawaii.com to continue my father’s work here, and I am honored and humbled to assume that mantle.

I am fortunate to have grown up in Hawai’i, unfathomably lucky to have surfed, hiked, camped and fished my way into adulthood. My parents allowed me to explore my myriad interests, and Pa in particular supported my ambitions as a professional musician. I like to recall that for many years my parents viewed my musical aspirations with loving bemusement, considering my efforts a “phase.” It was on my thirtieth Christmas when years of touring the U.S. with a band I founded were validated. My father bought me a guitar. It wasn’t a top-of-the-line model, but it was and indication that Ma and Pa were proud of me. That guitar remains the greatest material gift that my parents ever gave me. There were bikes, surfboards and skateboards under the Christmas trees some memorable years, but it was that guitar that spoke the most about their love for me.

I hope to provide unique insight for Hawaii-Aloha.com blog readers into the limitless potential for physical, mental and spiritual fulfillment that Hawai’i holds for those who reside in or visit these islands. As a professional musician, I may post about nightlife. As a lover of local food, I may post about my favorite place to get a good plate lunch or fresh seafood. As an avid outdoorsman, I may post about the best uncrowded beach or the best kept secret in local golf. I’ll probably do some wise-cracking, too. As my father’s son and as a writer, I will most certainly endeavor to post pithy, relevant information about these islands that readers will find useful as they explore the most geographically isolated, biologically rich and culturally unique archipelago on Earth.
