26th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival
The 26th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival begins this week, with a dizzying array of films to be viewed on all islands, at multiple theaters per island. Two-hundred and fifty four movies from 47 countries will be viewed throughout the islands over the next 2 weeks.
This year’s theme at the Louis Vuitton-branded event (sorry ladies, no handbags are being given out) is Asia-Pacific cinematography, with forays from filmmakers that hail from nearly every Asian country. Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Chinese are just a few of the locations film makers call home—many of whom have ancestral ties to Hawaii.
One film that has arrived on Hawaiian waters with a buzz is Japanese-made “Hula Girls”, which was entirely scored by local boy Jake Shimabukuro. A Korean film entitled “The Host” has been raising eyebrows in light of the recent tremors emanating from the country, which takes a politically charged look at ecological issues within its unique storyline.
The festival takes place on Oahu beginning this week, and running through October 29th. Kauai offers showings on Oct. 20 and 21; Molokai on the 21 and 22; Maui between Oct. 23—26, and on the Big Island from Nov. 3—5. For information, movie descriptions, showings, times, ticketing and theater locations, go to the festival’s Web site, www.hiff.org
