Travel channel has consistently placed Lanikai beach on the east side of Oahu in the top 5 beaches in the world. A bit under the radar however, are the two islands directly off of Lanikai beach called the Mokuluas. Once a local secret, tours of the island are now offered to small groups of people. The Kayak tour starts from Kailua Beach where you, your guides, and a handful of others will set out through the bay to Moku Nui (directly translates to “big island” but is the northern island of the two).
After a nice paddle through the shallows of the bay, you have time to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach at the front of the island and the stunning scenery of the Koolau Mountain Range. Then the guides will take you on a tour of the island, which is also a bird sanctuary, and will eventually lead you to the queens bath on the backside, a natural saltwater pool with views of Molokai and Maui on clear days.
Once you have gotten your fill of the crystal clear waters surrounding the Mokuluas, and time permitting, the guides will then escort you to the beautiful white sands of Lanikai beach for some snorkeling and a complementary lunch to replenish after the paddle. Afterwards they give you a bit more time to lounge in the sun and then its back to the real world. The tour guides are nice and give you some good background information about the Mokuluas and are open books to pick for local knowledge.
Tip: I recommend the 4 hour guided tour, though other tours offered are described below. If needed, transportation is free from Waikiki hotels. Be aware that this tour does require physical activity. I wouldn’t recommend a long night out on the town after this one. 2 Hour Guided Kayaking Tour:
This tour leaves out of Kailua Beach park. Guides will take a small group of guests to the soft sandy beach on the offshore island of Popo’ia. A 20-30 minute eco-hike around the island will follow observing the native wildlife and marine animals. Guests will also learn about Volcanology, Ecology, and history of the area. 6 Hour Guided Kayaking Tour This tour is the most challenging kayak adventure offered. All of the gear you need for the trip will be provided including PFD's and lockers to store your personal belongings. Tour leaves with elite guides off of the Waimanalo Pier, directly inshore of Rabbit Island (A Hawaiian Monk Seal nature preserve). Kayakers are lead through Waimanalo Bay with the scenic Ko’olau Mountain Range as the backdrop. You will also traverse the waters of Kailua Bay and experience the Mokulua Islands and the beautiful Lanikai Beach area. 4 Hour Self Guided Kayaking Tour Here's your chance to be at one with the ocean at one of the most beautiful bays in the world; Kailua Bay.
